THE MEETING OF TARIEL AND AVTANDIL

ქალი ადგა და წავიდა მის ყმისა მოსაყვანებლად;
ხელი მოჰკიდა, მოჰყვანდა, ვით, მთვარე მოსავანებლად;

ტარიელის ვარდი იყო დათრთვილული, არ დაზრული;

მე პატრონისა ჩემისა ასული შემყვარებია;

Whereat she rose at his words, went to the youth in the cavern.
“He is not angry”, she whispered, “come, he is waiting to meet you”.
She led him by the hand and he seemed the moon in its glory.
When Avtandil stood before him, “Truly a sun!” thought Tariel.

Tariel stepped forward to greet him. Bright like two suns was their brilliance;
Or as the moon that scatters its beams on the meadow beneath it.
Compared with their beauty even the cypress was of no worth.
Seven bright suns of heaven! To what else could one liken these heroes!

Then the two kissed one another and heart clung to heart in affection.
Tears glowed on sweet-scented roses, pearls scattered flashes of lightning.
Clasped in each other’s arms they sighed and lamented together.
Now did the jacinth worth rubies turn to the colour of amber.

Tariel took Avtandil’s hand and seated him down beside him,
Deeply affected, they wept, shedding hot tears in silence.
Asmat in eloquent language calmed them, and pleaded as follows:
“Slay not yourselves, O lions, eclipse not the sun with your weeping”.

Tariel’s rose was not frozen but only covered with hoarfrost.
“Tell me your story”, he pleaded, “for I am eager to know it.
Where have you come from? Tell me, what do you seek in this forest?
Now as for me, woe is me! even death has forgotten about me”.

At which Avtandil answered in soothing, yet eloquent phrases:
“You are an unequalled hero, fierce as a lion, yet gentle.
I am an Arabian vassal, come from the court of Arabia.
Love has completely enslaved me; unquenchable fire consumes me.

“I love the fair daughter of Rostevan, monarch and lord of Arabia.
She is acknowledged the sovereign. Is esteemed and loved by her subjects.
Strange you may think it, Tarlel. When I tell you I have beheld you
Try to remember the day you slaughtered an army of soldiers.

ვერ ნახეს შენი მნახავი ვერცა ყმა, ვერცა ბერია;

აქანამდის მნახავიცა კაცი შენი არ მენახა;
ქურდნი ვნახენ, რომე თქვენთვის სიტყვა რამე გაემკვახა;
მათრახითა ჩამოგეგდო ერთი, მკვდართა დაგესახა;

იტყვის: “მახსოვს ეგე საქმე, თუცა არის ადრინდელი;
ერთგან გნახენ ნადირობას შენ და შენი მე გამზრდელი;

“While we were hunting we saw you weeping beside a stream.
The king was angry with you for you disregarded his order,
And did not come to his summons. So we sent soldiers to take you.
But you dyed the field and valley red with the blood of the soldiers.

“You cut off the heads of our men with a slashing whip you carried.
But when you saw the monarch riding behind you you vanished,
Disappeared like a phantom or Kaji leaving no trace behind you.
We were enraged, yet you left us completely stunned and bewildered.

“Kings have their humours, you know, so my lord became pale and gloomy.
Men were sent out but no trace could be found of the course you had taken.
Nowhere throughout the whole world could we find a soul who had seen you.
She who competes with the sun has sent me abroad to find you.

“She said to me: ‘My beloved, bring me some news of that horseman.
Then shall the wish of your heart and all you desire be granted’.
Three years have passed since then in this quest, three years of weeping.
Do you not marvel I live, or how I endure her absence?

“I have met no one till now who has heard of or ever beheld you.
By chance I encountered some Turks who had spoken to you so rudely
That with your whip you smote them and one fell mortally wounded.
They told me of all that had happened. From them I learned about you”.

Tariel remembered the day he had slain King Rostevan’s soldiers.
“Though it occurred long ago, I well recall how it happened.
Yes, I remember you also, you and your master were hunting.
I, by the side of the stream, was weeping for her who consumes me.

“What did you want of me then? We were strangers. We knew not each other.
While I was weeping alone, you were merrily sporting and hunting,
Yet you set your soldiers upon me, giving them orders to seize me.
Instead of capturing me it was you who bore off the corpses.

მას გავექცევი, ვისგანცა ჩემი არა ვცნა ამება;

ამა დღემან დამავიწყა, გული ჩემი ვინ დაბინდა;
დამიგდია სამსახური მისი, იქმნას, რაცა გინდა;

ტარიელ უთხრა: “მე შენი გული აწ მემხურვალების;

წამოსრულ ხარ ჩემად ძებნად, პატრონისა სამსახურად;

“When I looked back and beheld the sovereign riding behind me
I pitied his lordship and therefore laid not my hands upon him.
So without saying a word I at once rode away and vanished.
Vanished! No other word can describe the speed of my courser.

“There is no horse on earth that can vie with its marvellous swiftness.
Before one blink of an eye, if I wish I can escape the unpleasant.
As to those Turks, they approached with evil design against me.
But they were brought to their senses by the blow I inflicted upon them.

“Now you have come as a comrade, therefore I welcome you gladly.
Bright as the sun is your face and your body a beautiful cypress.
True, you have borne afflictions, were subject to troubles and sorrows,
Yet you can find no mortal who, like me, is abandoned by Heaven”.

“You, who are worthy of only the praises of sages”, said Avtandil,
“Praise me so highly I marvel. What am I to deserve your praises?
You are the light of the world. The sun both of earth and of heaven.
Even the tears you have shed could not darken the glow of your lustre.

“This day has made me forget the image of her who enslaved me.
Though she possessed my heart, for you I renounce her service.
True, a jacinth is better, still I desire enamel.
My only desire is to help you. To be bound to your heart in friendship”.

Tariel answered: “The fever consuming your heart has warmed me.
What have I done, O lion, To deserve such endearing devotion?
There is a saying that hearts of all lovers are kin to each other.
How can I recompense the anguish of parting from her you adore?

“You have come out in your loved one’s service to seek and find me,
God has helped you to find me and you have endeavoured bravely.
How shall I tell you, alas, why I roam the forests thus maddened?
If I relate it hot fires will reduce me to smoke and to ashes”.

მეხვეწებოდა, ლამოდა ჩემგან რასამე სმენასა;

ამას დაყმუნდა ტარიელ დამწვარი, დაალებული;
ასმათს უბრძანა: “მას აქათ შენ ხარ ჩემ თანა ხლებული;

ხამსო მისთვის სიკვდილსა და ჭირსა თავი არ დაჰრიდოს;

დაბნედილსა მაპკურებდი, გული მითა გარდამბანე;

ღილ-ჩახსნილი საამბობლად დაჯდა, მხარნი ამოყარნა;
ვითა მზე ჯდა მოღრუბლებით, დიდხან შუქნი არ ადარნა;

“Tears cannot quench”, said the maiden, the flames of your love, O lion.
Listen to me, take caunsel, though my words may incite your resentment.,
This youth is willing to hazard his love and his life in your service.
Tell him all that you suffer; his counsel may bring you some comfort.

“Oh, how he begged me”, she said, “to tell him the whole of your story.
But has the tongue of mortal expression sufficient to tell it,
Pray that the Lord give you strength, to unburden the load of your soul.
God is our hope and redeemer, the Giver of good and of mercy!”

Tariel sat thoughtful and silent, yet burning flames consumed him.
“My sister”, said he to Asmat, “you are witness to all I have suffered.
Well, too well do you know that the wound I endure is cureless.
Still I pity this youth. His tears have redoubled my sorrows.

“A man who is pledged to another in friendship and love”, said Tariel,
“Must for his sake be ready to die and withstand every peril.
How could the Lord save the one if He cause not the other to perish?
Listen and I shall relate, happen what may in the telling”.

Tariel said to Asmat: “Bring water and sit by my side.
Sprinkle my brow if I faint and bathe my breast to restore me.
But if you see me dead then weep over my corpse and lament me.
Dig me a grave and bury me. Here let the grave be my cradle”.

Then he unbuttoned himself, and laid bare his breast and his shoulders.
Like the bright sun that Is hidden in clouds he sat shrouded in darkness.
Sat with his lips tightly clenched overcome by conflicting emotions.
At length he drew in his breath and a flood of tears was unfettered.

Loudly he sobbed: “O beloved, lost to me now and forever!
You are my soul and my heart, the hope and breath of my being!
Who cut you down, I know not, O cypress planted in Eden?
You must, O heart, be consumed, O heart a hundred times kindled.
