STORY OF NURADIN PRIDON WHEN TARIEL MET HIM

ღამით მევლო, მოვიდოდი, ზღვისა პირსა აჩნდეს ბაღნი;
ჰგვანდეს ქალაქს, ვეახლენით, ცალ-კერძ იყვნეს კლდეთა ნაღნი;
არ მეამის კაცთა ნახვა, მიდაღვიდეს გულსა დაღნი;

ხეთა ძირსა მივიძინე, მათ მონათა ჭამეს პური;

შემოირბევდა ზღვის პირ-პირ, მას თურე წყლული სტკიოდა;

მართ ვითა ქარი მოქროდა გაფიცხებული, მწყრომელი;
მონა მივსწიე, მისისა შეყრისა ვიყავ მნდომელი;

მას მონასა არა უთხრა, არცა სიტყვა მოუსმინა;

მე ვუთხარ: “დადეგ, დაწყნარდი, გარდავხდეთ ძირსა ხეთასა;

“We landed by night. When we came ashore we saw gardens before us.
And at a distance there rose steep rocks and a city below it.
Branded by fires, the thought of the sight of people annoyed me,
Yet we were weary and sought for a place to rest until daybreak.

“While the two slaves were eating I lay down and dropped into slumber.
When I awoke it was day but my sorrow dimmed the sunlight.
Hope and all joy seemed dead, every endeavour unavailing.
Tears overflowed my eyes and moistened the fields and the meadows.

“Suddenly I heard a loud shout. I looked round and beheld a horseman.
Though he waS bleeding from wounds he rode proudly along the seashore,
Holding an upraised sword which was broken and streaming with blood.
He threatened, cursed and complained; clearly some foe had enraged him.

“He rode a raven-black courser, the same which I now possess,
Sweeping along like a whirlwind incensed and wrathful at someone.
Wishing to know who he was, I at once sent a slave to ask him.
I bade him stop the horseman and ask him the cause of his anger.

“But when the slave approached him he paid no heed but rode onward.
So I remounted my stallion and, urging it on, overtook him.
I cried to the horseman: ‘Stop! Tell me what has befallen you!”
Turning his head he perceived me; I pleased him, no doubt, for he halted.

“He looked me over and said: ‘Only God could create such beauty!”
He said to me: ‘If you wish I will tell you all that has happened.
The foe whom I thought to be goats have proved to be treacherous lions.
They fell like cowards upon me before I could put on my armour’.

“‘Let us dismount and converse at the foot of these trees. ‘I told him.
A knight who is truly a knight withdraws not even when wounded”.
Then as a father an affectionate son I led him with me.
So irresistibly fair and so manly was he that I marvelled.

ნურადინ-ფრიდონ სახელ მძეს, მეფე ვარ მუნა მჯდომელი;

თვით ბიძასა ჩემსა მიჰხვდა, ვისთა შვილთა აწ დამკოდეს;

მუნა გასვლა მომნდომოდა, მით მრეკალი არ ვახშირე;

“One of my slaves was a leech, so he carefully drew out the arrow,
Bound up the wound and soothed it, and allayed the pain with some ointment.
Only then I asked the stranger: ‘Who are you, by whom were you wounded?”
After bewailing himself he began to narrate his story.

“He said: ‘Who you are I know not. To none on earth can I liken you.
Why have you sickened and languished, like the waning moon of the heavens?
Why has the glow of your rose and your jet grown pallid and sallow?
Why has the Lord extinguished the light that He kindled within you?

“‘l am Nuradin Pridon and live not far from this region
In the city of Mulghazanzar where I dwell and am absolute ruler.
Here, where we stand, are the bounds of the realm wherein I am master.
My kingdom is small, it is true, but my people are happy and prosperous.

“’My grandsire divided the kingdom between my father and uncle.
He said my share was an island of which he made me the owner.
But it was seized by that uncle whose sons have fallen upon me
As I refused to give up the place which was given to me.

“‘Early this morning I went and hunted along the seashore;
But Wishing to hunt on the island I took but a few of my beaters.
Wait for me here while I hunt’, I commanded my army of soldiers,
And left them behind me taking along but five of my falconers.

“‘We went by boat up a creek that flowed to the sea from the island.
Having no fear I landed, sure that my kin would not harm me.
Why should I fear I thought. Am I not the lord of the island?
So as no one appeared I gaily halloed and shouted.

“‘They heard and were vexed, It seems at the thought that I scorned and disdained them.
But they approached us stealthily and surrounding my men with their soldiers,
Blocked up the road that led to my soldiers and ship by the seashore.
With swords in their hands, my cousins rushed on my soldiers and slew them.

ზღვა-ზღვა ცურვით წამოვუვე, ჩემნი მჭვრეტნი გავაცბუნვე;

მივედით მისსა ქალაქსა ტურფასა, მაგრა ცოტასა;

“‘I heard the loud shouts of their men, beheld the flash of their lances.
Begging a boat of the boatman, I sailed down the creek to the seashore.
Like the waves of a swelling sea, they rushed upon me in hundreds
With brandishing swords, but In vain did they try to compass or engage me

“‘The troops In the front drove me back where another great host was advancing.
I brandished my sword and wheeled round just as they charged upon me.
Suddenly my sword broke to pieces; my shafts were also exhausted.
Uttering yells of savage delight they closed in upon me.

“‘Thus to my utter despair they surrounded and advanced to seize me,
But with the speed of an arrow my courser leaped into the water.
Curse him!’ they shouted in fury and straightway destroyed all my soldiers.
Thus I escaped certain death from the hands of my treacherous cousins.

“‘As there is a God in Heaven so will my blood be avenged!
May God grant me strength and the power to bring my boast to fulfilment!
They will lament their existence and their lives will be one endless wailing,
And of their cursed bodies will ravens and crows make a banquet”.

“Thereat did love and esteem awake in my heart for tile stranger.
‘There is no need’, I told him, ‘for you to hasten without me.
I shall go forward with you and do vengeance upon those traitors.
We two are warriors, not cowards, no fear can alarm or possess us”.

“‘You know not’, I said, ‘who I am nor have you heard my story.
But I shall tell it to you at leisure when we have time’.
What joy can be weighed against this to me!’ was Pridon’s reply.
I swear by your life and by Heaven to devote all my life in your service.

“‘After resting a while we went to his beautiful city
Where we were met by his armies who wept on seeing him wounded.
They wailed and scratched their faces, rent their garments to pieces.
First they warmly embraced him, then kissed the hilt of his sabre.

კვლა მოვეწონე, ვეტურფე მე მისი გარდნაკიდარი;

“I was received by them all with loud acclamations and praises.
We went and surveyed his city. Never has man seen such splendours!
There every man was attired in rich and magnificent garments.
You, O bright sun’, they exclaimed, ‘are sent to dispel our darkness!”
