AVTANDIL’S DEPARTURE FROM PRIDON TO SEEK NESTAN-DAREJAN AND HIS MEETING THE CARAVAN

არს თინათინის გონება მისად სალხენლად გულისა;

Like the majestic moon, Avtandil goes on his way.
The thought of seeing his sun gladdens his weary heart.
He says: “I am far from you. Alas! the falseness of fate!
You, only you, my sun, have healing balm for my wound.

“Why does the frenzy of grief for my brothers continually burn me?
Why has my heart become a heart of hard rock – a cliff?
Even the lances of parting have left no bruise upon me.
You are the reason why my world is so bitter and vile”.

Avtandil rode on alone, with only four soldiers behind him,
And wherever he went he sought solace for the sorrows of Tariel.
His tears gushed forth as he rode like torrents incessantly flowing,
For him the world was a straw, less than a straw in the balance.

Avtandil stopped and questioned all whom he met on his journey,
Asking for tidings of Nestan, till be had travelled a hundred days
When once he saw from a hill camels all loaded with baggage,
And merchants who stood on the shore like men distressed and bewildered.

He saw on the shore before him caravans countless in number;
The merchants were sorely distressed, stricken with fear or disaster.
Avtandil greeted them warmly. they answered and hailed him with praises.
When he inquired who they were they willingly told him their story.

Usam was chief of the caravan, the oldest and wisest among them.
He gave Avtandil his blessing, praised him with eloquent phrases.
“O glorious sun!” he exclaimed, “You have come as our life’s redeemer.
I entreat you, dismount, your lordship; hear now the cause of our troubles”.

When he dismounted they praised him: “O sun! may you live forever!
We are merchants from Bagdad, upholders of the faith of Muhammed.
From far away lands we have journeyed to trade with the King of the Seas.
Our camels are heavily laden with priceless treasures and fabrics.

ვუშველეთ, ენა მოეცა სიტყვისა გამომგებარე;

მუნ მეკობრეთა დაგვხოცნეს ძელით, სახნისის წვერითა;

დაბრუნვებითა გვეცემის ზიანი არ-საზომისა;

რაცა მოვა საქმე ზენა, მომავალი არ აგვცთების;

კიოდეს და მოდიოდეს, იზახდეს და ბუკსა ჰკრესა;
შეუშინდა ქარავანი მათ ლაშქართა სიდიდესა;

“Here on the strand we discovered a youth lying unconscious.
When he recovered his senses we asked him to tell us his story.
What has befallen you, stranger? What brings you to this country?
Do not embark’, he said, ‘Pirates are roving the waters’.

“‘Our caravan set out from Egypt, with a convoy to guide and protect us.
The ship we embarked on was laden with merchandise costly and precious.
Pirates soon plundered our vessel, our men were captured and slaughtered.
I do not know how I survived it, nor do I know how I came here’.

“This is the reason you see us, distressed and lamenting, O lion.
If we return to our city, our losses will be our destruction.
If we embark, the marauders will plunder our vessel and kill us.
We are bewildered and helpless, courage and reason forsake us”.

Avtandil said: “It is useless to abandon yourselves to your sorrow.
Destiny will not be cheated, none can reverse its decisions.
Fear not these pirates, however! Count upon me to assist you!
All who would fight you shall perish, pierced through by the blade of my sabre”.

Joy filled the hearts of the merchants; courage returned to their spirits.
“He is a lion-like hero. not timid like us but intrepid.
We will put all in his keeping – our hopes, our lives, our possessions”.
Therefore they boarded a vessel, heavily loaded with treasure.

All unmolested, their vessel sailed under favouring breezes,
To Avtandll, hero undaunted, the merchants entrusted their safety.
After some days on the ocean, a vessel came sailing toward them.
Flying the flag of the pirates, a battering ram at its bows.

The ship of the pirates came nearer, with shouting and blaring of trumpets.
The sight of their numbers struck terror in the timorous hearts of the merchants.
Avtandil bade them take courage: “Fear not the boasting of braggarts.
Either today I will slay them or lay down my life in the effort!

უგანგებოდ ვერას მიზმენ, შე-ცა-მებნენ ხმელთა სპანი;
განგებაა, არ დავრჩები, ლახვარნია ჩემთვის მზანი;

შორს ისრითა არ დაგხოცნენ, ჩაიხშენით თანა კარნი;

მას ხელთა კეტი რკინისა ჰქონდა ხელითა ცალითა;

აძგერეს ძელი, რომელსა ზედა სახნისი ჰგებოდა;

ძელი მოსტყდა და ავთანდილ დარჩა ნავ-დაულეწელი;
შეშინდეს იგი ლაშქარნი, გზა ძებნეს გარდსახვეწელი;
ვეღარ გარდესწრნეს, დარდუხლტა მტერთა მი და მო მლეწელი;

მათ ლაშქართა გულ-უშიშრად ასრე ჰხოცდა, ვითა თხასა;
ზოგი ნავსა შეანარცხის, ზოგსა ჰყრიდა შიგან ზღვასა;
ერთმანერთსა შემოსტყორცის, რვა ცხრასა და ცხრა ჰკრის რვასა;

“They can do nothing to me if I am not doomed to die;
But if my fate is to fall, already the lances are sharpened.
Comrades in arms can do nothing for him who is marked for disaster.
He who has mastered this wisdom will never fear destiny’s workings.

“Merchants and traders are weaklings, unskilled in the knowledge of warfare,
Therefore seek shelter and safety, lest the swift arrows destroy you!
See me, alone in the battle, using my limbs like a lion!
See how the blood of the corsair shall crimson the waters around us!”

With movements as swift as a panther, he clad himself in armour,
Wielding a weapon of iron as if it were light as a feather.
Dauntless of heart and demeanour he stood in the helm of the vessel
Slaying the foe with his sword as his glance slew the hearts of beholders.

The enemy yelled without ceasing, propelling their ram from the buttress,
But Avtandil stood in the prow and faced them with unflinching courage.
He struck at the ram with his mace, breaking its shaft into splinters,
He struck with the strength of a lion, till the enemy’s might was confounded.

The enemy’s ram was demolished, but AvtandiI’s ship was undamaged.
Stricken by panic, the pirates sought to escape from his fury;
He leaped like a tiger amongst them, hacking their limbs with his sabre,
Never desisting from slaughter till all lay lifeless around him.

Slaying the foe as the archer slays the wild goat with his arrow,
Avtandil flung down their bodies, letting them die where they fell,
Some on the deck of the vessel, some in the depth of the ocean,
The cries of the wounded were stifled by the weight of the corpses above them.

The knight was grateful to God for his victory over the pirates.
The wounded implored him: “O lion, slaughter us not, we beseech you”.
Those who survived he slew not but carried them off as his servants.
The Apostle truly declared: “Love is engendered by fear”.

ვერმცა მათ თქვეს, ნაომრობა როგორ ტურფად დაუშვენდა;

მოეგებნეს, აკოცებდეს თავსა, პირსა, ფერხთა, ხელსა;

იგი იქმან ყველაკასა, იდუმალსა, ზოგსა ცხადსა;

აწ დავხოცენ მტერნი თქვენნი, გავასრულენ, რაცა ვთქვენი;

Boast not, O man, of your strength, of heroic deeds and achievements.
Might Is of no avail if the power of God does not help you.
A single spark is enough to burn a forest to cinders.
A log is as sharp as a sabre if God desires to protect you.

Avtandil found on the ship the ill-gotten wealth of the pirates.
He called all the merchants to him and showed them the stores of the treasures –
Usam no longer lamented but was happy again and elated.
Grateful to God for his Goodness, he exalted the knight who had saved them.

Those who praise Avtandil need a thousand tongues to describe him;
Nor could they tell how enchanting and wondrously fair was his beauty.
The caravan joyfully shouted: “Great are your doings, O, God!
Night is dispelled by the sun and a glorious day is before us”.

They eagerly thronged around him. They kissed his face, hands and feet.
Endless praises were sung, and the air rung with loud acclamations.
The sight of such beauty maddens the fool as well as the wiseman.
“You have delivered our lives from certain disaster, they told him.

Avtandil said: “Let us pray to the Lord, our Creator and Father.
By Him do the heavenly powers determine the course of our footsteps.
His are the secrets beyond us, the wondrous birth of creation.
Trust in the Lord and believe Him; He is our only redeemer.

“God has preserved you from evil, from certain death and destruction.
I, who am only a mortal could do nothing if God had not helped me.
Now I have slain your foes; I have fulfilled all I promised.
Take as a present from me the ship with its measureless riches”.

Happy is he who has vanquished the foe in a hazardous battle,
A tower of unequalled bravery, surpassing his comrades in courage.
Though he was wounded and weary, his bearing was calm and majestic.
They lavishly showered upon him praises, good wishes and blessings.

მათსა ნავსა გარდმოიღეს, ნავი სრულად გარდმოცალეს;

“შენგან ვართ გამაგრებულნი, ჩვენ ვიცით ჩვენი ცვილობა;

ჩემსაცა მქონდა ურიცხვი, უსახო ლარ-საგებელი;
რას ვაქმნევ თქვენსა? რად მინდა? ოდენ ვარ თქვენი მხლებელი;

მე სავაჭროსა ჩავიცვამ, დავიწყებ ჯუბაჩობასა;

ესე საქმე ქარავანსა გაეხარნეს მეტად დია;

The merchants examined the vessel loaded with measureless booty
Amazed at the riches plundered and amassed by the murderous pirates
By Avtandil’s order the vessel was emptied of all its treasures,
Then it was smashed into pieces, burned and thrown to the water.

Usam conveyed to Avtandil a message sent by the merchants:
“All we possess is now yours, the riches you took from the pirates.
You have relieved our sorrow, restored us our lives and our treasures.
Therefore we beg you take them; suffice whatever you give us”.

Avtandil answered: “O brothers, only now you heard me tell you:
God perceiving your tears has taken compassion upon you.
He, not I, is your saviour. Why should you thank me, I wonder!
My stallion, my sword and myself are all I need for my journey.

“I am grateful, indeed, for your kindness, but I do not want your riches,
I possess inexhaustible wealth, silk fabrics and gold beyond measure.
What use to me Is this booty? I have served you as one would a comrade.
I have a long journey before me and a dangerous task to fulfil.

“Keep for yourselves the treasures I found on the ship of the pirates.
I shall not claim or desire it, so take it and share it among you.
But I entreat you grant me only one favour, my brothers,
Which for my sake I implore to keep as a secret between us.

“Forget I am lord of a kingdom, let others believe me a merchant.
Call me your chief and master, not lord or an eminent title.
I will dress myself as a merchant, remain as the head of the caravan;
But for the sake of our friendship keep it a secret among you”.

The merchants rejoiced at these tidings. They came and saluted him, saying:
“This is our hearts’ desire, the wish we asked you to grant us.
Allow us, O lord, to attend you, accept our devotion and service.
To serve one who shines like the sun Is to us the greatest of honours”.

მიჰხვდეს ტაროსსა ამოსა, ნიადაგ ამოდ ვლიდიან;
