THE GOING OF AVTANDIL TO PRIDON’S

ერთგან დასხდეს და დაიწყეს კოცნა, ლაღობა წყლიანი;

მან გაკვირვებით უჭვრიტა მათსა ლაღობა-წოლასა;

Avtandil wrote in answer: “I have read your letter, my lady.
Know that fires of passion stronger than yours consume me.
I also desire to be ever with you and find joy in your presence.
Let us then meet and unite, since our feelings and wishes are mutual”.

Words cannot tell the joy that she felt on reading his letter.
She wrote: “I will weep no more and shed tears as I did in your absence.
Here you shall find me alone, waiting for you, my beloved.
Come when the evening falls. Hasten to me, I awate you”.

That night, when the youth had received and read the letter from Patman,
When on his way to her house, he met her slave with a message.
“Come not tonight”, she wrote, “you will find me unready to meet you”.
But he continued his way paying no heed to the message.

Though angered he hastened and stopped not till he arrived at her dwelling.
Patman was sitting alone and seemed troubled on seeing him enter.
But he perceived at one glance that the woman was vexed and excited.
He wondered yet hid his annoyance, and thought it best to caress her.

Then he sat down beside her, embraced and ardently kissed her.
But unawares a youth with a slave appeared in the doorway.
And on beholding Avtandil he started and stopped in amazement.
“It looks”, he said to himself, “as if the road is rocky”.

Fear took possession of Patman and she shook in terror and trembled.
But the strange youth looked down upon them in scorn and derision.
“I shall not”, he said to Patman, “hinder your amourous triflings.
But when it dawns, false woman, I shall make you repent this evening

“You have not only shamed me, but made me the object of hatred.
I will take vengeance tomorrow; tomorrow, you dissolute wanton,
With your own teeth, you will tear at and eat the flesh of your children.
But if I fail to fulfil this then spit on my beard and slay me!”

ესე თქვა და კაცმან წვერთა მოიზიდნა, გავლნა კარნი;
ფატმან შექმნა თავსა ცემა, ღაწვნი ესხნეს ნახოკარნი;
ცრემლთა მისთა შეეყარნეს, წყაროსაებრ ისმნეს წკარნი;

ამას ყველასა ავთანდილ ისმენდა გაცბუნვებული;

ნურას ნუ მკითხავ ამბავსა, ვერცა რას გითხრობ ენითა;

ხვაშიადთა ვერ-მმალავსა, უჭკუოსა, შმაგსა, რეტსა;

Touching his beard with his hand, he turned and quickly departed.
Patman beat her head and tore at her cheeks in anguish.
Loudly she wept and her tears fell about her in showers.
“You who would stone me approach and stone me to death”, she wailed.

“Woe unto me!” she wailed, “I have slain my husband and children!
I have lost my own kindred! Woe unto you, my loved ones!
All my possessions, my peerless cut gems I have looted and squandered.
Thus have I ruined my children and my house with my tongue and my folly”.

Avtandil listened to her astonished and greatly bewildered.
“What is your trouble?” he asked her, “Why all these tears and this wailing?”
What have you done or said that he threatens to ruin and slay you?
Be calm and tell me who was that youth and what was his errand?”

The woman replied: “O Iion! I am maddened and frantic with weeping.
Ask me no more to speak for my tongue lacks strength to relate it.
Why do I weep and lament? With my own hands I have slaughtered my children.
Woe! In my passion for you I have slain myself and my dear ones!

“Justice thus punishes him who cannot conceal a secret,
Cannot be silent but chatters in witless and half-maddened phrases.
You who now witness my sorrow, help me with your lamentations.
There is no cure for him who devours the flesh of his loved ones.

“Avtandil, you must take one of the only two ways before you:
Go if you can in the dead of the night, and secretly kill him.
Thus you will rescue my house and me from death and dishonour.
When you return to me I shall tell you the cause of my troubles.

“If not, go away at once. Take away your wares on asses.
Gather your goods and while there is time escape from this country,
Lest all my sins overwhelm and fill you with untold sorrows.
For if he comes at dawn he will make me devour my children”.

გზასა მართლად წამიყვანოს, თვარა მეშვლად მინდა არად;

ავთანდილ გავლო ქალაქი მით უებროთა ტანითა;

მუნ მიჰყავს პირ-მზე ავთანდილ მას, მისსა წინამძღომელსა;

იგი ყმა საწოლს მარტო წვა გულითა ჯავრიანითა;
ხელ-სისხლიანი ავთანდილ შედგა ტანითა ჯანითა;

Avtandil, courageous and proud, was now kindled to action.
Taking a ponderous whip, he rose, an impregnable tower!
“Only a coward”, he said, “would fly and leave you defenceless!”
Think not to find a mortal braver or fairer than he was!

“Give me a gUide to show me the way”, he said to Patman.
“I need no other assistance; I will engage him alone.
That youth is no warrior, Patman, nor do I think him my equal.
Strengthen and comfort your heart; you have nothing to fear, my lady”.

Patman then gave him a trustworthy slave to gUide and attend him.
Her fear was appeased, and the fires that had blazed to distraction were slackened.
“Since you will kill him”, she said, “and rid the world of a blackguard,
Bring me the ring he wears, my present to him, I entreat you”.

Avtandil stealthily passed through the city to Chachnagir’s palace.
A building of red and green stone which stood on the seashore before them.
In the lower part of the palace, hanging one over the other
They saw terrace upon terrace, beautiful, numerous, vast.

There was the sun-faced, lion-like Avtandil led by his guide
Who said in a whisper to him: “This my lord, is the palace”.
He showed it to him, and added: “Do you see that terraced roof?
There on that terrace he rests or perhaps he now sleeps In his chamber”.

Avtandil saw two men sleeping before the chamber.
Losing no time he advanced and stealthily entered the building.
When he approached the man, with one sweep of his hands he seized them,
Struck head against head until brain, hair and blood were mingled.

Angry at heart the youth lay alone on his bed in his chamber.
Before he had time to rise or to see who had fallen upon him
With an impetuous charge the blood-stained Avtandil seized him,
Dashed him to the ground, with one fierce stroke slew him.

მე და უსენი შვილითურთ აწ ახლად დავიბადენით;

He, the resplendent sun, was the terror of all who opposed him.
He forgot not the ring but hastily cut off the finger,
Then be lifted the corpse and hurled it into the sea,
Where there would be no tomb nor man to dig him a grave.

Thus was the slaughter committed without any sound or scandal.
Sweet was the rose that went forth content at heart and untroubled.
It is a marvel to me – why be was so embittered.
Thus by the road he had come he returned triumphant and happy.

When the lion, the sun, the sweet-tongued entered Patman’s house
He said to Patman: “He is dead. He will see the sun no longer.
That I have slain that youth the Lord and this slave are witness.
Here is his finger and ring and behold my blood-stained dagger.

“Why was that youth incensed? Tell me the cause of your terror.
I am eager to know how he was able to threaten you!”
Patman fell down on her knees. Prostrated herself before him.
“The wound in my heart is healed and the fires that consumed it extinguished.

“Now am I born anew and my husband and children revived.
Tongue cannot utter praises worthy of you, O lion!
Since he is dead and I am delivered of him who distressed me,
Hear me, for now I will give you a detailed account of the story”.
