AVTANDIL’S DEPARTURE FROM GULANSHARO AND HIS MEETING WITH TARIEL

პირ-მხიარული აცორვებს მართ ოდენ მარტო თავითა;

აგრგვინდა ცა და ღრუბელნი ცროდეს ბროლისა ცვარითა;
ვარდთა აკოცა ბაგითა, მითვე ვარდისა დარითა;

სადა-ა ჩემი მოყვარე და ვისთვის ცრემლი მდენია;

მინდორს სადმე წავიდოდა, მხეცისაებრ ველთა ვლიდა;

After a long and prosperous journey AvtandiI landed.
And with an eager heart he rapidly rode towards the forest.
He was impatient to tell his joyous tidings to Tariel.
And with his hands uplifted he gave thanks unto God for His goodness.

The time for their meeting had come; and the earth was clothed in green.
Summer still lingered and the sweet-scented roses were in full bloom.
The course of the sun was changed and the setting out of the cypress.
Tears of joy filled his eyes as he gazed at the flowers around him.

Thunder now rolled in the distance; clouds rained dew on the roses
Which, with his rose-like lips, Avtandil tenderly kissed.
“O flowers, delight fills my heart as my eyes gaze upon you”, he said
For in your sweetness I see the glow of her heavenly beauty”.

When he remembered the woe-stricken Tariel, tears overwhelmed him.
He took many perilous paths on his way to the cavern,
And many a pathless region, unknown and deserted by mankind.
He slew lions and tigers as he crossed the field and the forest.

Soon from the distance he saw the hollowed-out caves in the mountain.
“The friend for whom I have suffered lives in that cavern”, he pondered.
“O with what joy will he listen to me as I tell him the tidings!
But if, alas, he is gone, my endeavours will have been in vain.

“He would not sit alone in the cavern, if he has come,
But like a beast go roaming or hunting in field or in forest.
Therefore perhaps it is better to look for him near the rushes”.
Thus he talked with himself as he galloped towards the river.

He galloped onward and sang with a joyous and happy heart.
Now and again with a cheerful voice, he called out his name.
And all at once he saw the glorious sun in its splendour.
Tariel stood with a sword in his hand at the edge of the rushes.

ტარიელს ლომი მოეკლა, მით ხრმალსა სისხლი სცხებოდა;
შამბისა პირსა ქვეითი დგა, ცხენი არა ჰხლებოდა;

ტარიელ ტირს და ავთანდილ სიცილით ეუბნებოდა;
გაღიმდის, ძოწნი გააპნის, კბილთაგან ელვა ჰკრთებოდა;

ყოველი ჩემი სალხინო მინახავს, – ნახვა შენია;

Tariel had slaughtered a lion, and the sword was still stained with its blood.
He was standing alone right at the edge of the rushes.
Hearing Avtandil’s thundering voice he started and quivered,
But when he saw and knew him he at once sprang forward to meet him.

Flinging his sword aside he hastily ran towards Avtandil
Who leaped from his horse and with out-stretched hand advanced to meet him.
Rushing forward they kissed and warmly embraced one another.
Opening roses diffused their fragrant, honey-sweet perfumes.

They fondly clung to each other with deep and mutual affection.
Tears of blood dyed the thickets of jet the colour of crimson.
Fountains and myriad streams of tears now watered the cypress.
“Since you have come the woes I have passed are as nothing, dear brother”.

Tariel wept, but marvelled why Avtandil laughed and was joyful.
He smiled, he opened his coral; the teeth of pearls flashed lightning.
“The tidings I have to tell you will delight your heart”, said Avtandil.
“Now will the rose that has faded and drooped be restored, my Tariel”.

Tariel answered: “Suffice the gladness this day has brought me;
That I behold you again is the only happiness left me.
Well do you know there exists no other balm to console me.
How can a mortal find joy if doomed by the will of Heaven?”

AvtandiI inwardly groaned to see the lion despairing.
So be resolved to tell the news without further delay.
Thereat he drew forth the veil of her whose lips were like roses.
Tariel, on seeing it, started and, trembling, seized it.

He knew at once her writing and the veil he had given to her.
He stopped like a man struck, then pressed to his lips her letter.
The rose became pallid in hue, the lashes drooped low and he fainted.
Not even Caen and Salman could have borne the tortures he suffered.

ვერა ვერ არგო დამწვარსა, სრულად ცეცხლ-ნადებარესა;

ყორანსა გაჰგლეჯს ხშირ-ხშირად, აფრთხობს ბროლისა ჭერითა;

“რაცა ვქმენო, არ უქმნია არცა შმაგსა, არცა რეტსა;

ავთანდილ მკერდსა დაასხა მას ლომსა სისხლი ლომისა;

Avtandil gazed at Tariel who lay like a corpse before bim.
Unavailing were all his endeavours to restore the youth to consciousness,
For fires had completely burned and consumed that shedder of lustre.
Woe! he lay deprived of his senses on account of those tokens of love.

Avtandil, yielding to anguish, sat down and softly lamented.
In his utter despair he tore his raven-black tresses.
The exquisitely-chiselled and finely-cut ruby was broken to fragments.
And from the crystal there flowed on the cypress coral-hued streams.

Avtandil scratched his face as he anxiously gazed at Tariel.
“What I have done no fool would have done, not even a madman.
Why did I quench the fire by pouring water upon it?
The heart that is suddenly struck has not the strength to endure it”.

He scratched his face; blood flowed from his cheeks as he gazed at Tariel
“What I have done to him, neither madman nor fool would have done.
Why in my haste did I pour water on unquenchable fire?
The heart that is suddenly struck by exceeding joy cannot bear it”.

Tariel lay with the spark of life smouldering within him.
Avtandil went to find water but on seeing the slaughtered lion
Quickly sprinkled Tariel’s breast with the blood of that beast.
The colourless rose now turned to ‘the hue of a pale-hued ruby.

Avtandil sprinkled on Tariel’s breast more blood of the lion.
Tariel heaved a deep sigh. The raven-black eyelashes quivered.
He opened his eyes and sat up. Though weak, he recovered his spirit.
In the light of the sun the rays of the moon seem blue and diminished.

Frost slays the rose in winter and the petals wither and perish.
In summer the sun with its drought and ardour slays or consumes it.
Yet does the nightingale chant to the rose and unburdens his soul.
By heat that consumes and frosts that destroy are their wounds redoubled.

იკითხავს, თუცა აშეთებს კითხვა წიგნისა მისისა;

აწ რადღა გვმართებს ტირილი? ხამს, დავსხდეთ ქმნად ღიმილისად;

მართ ვითა ლალსა მზისაგან, მას ფერი ეზარდებოდა;

შესხდეს და შინა წავიდეს, მათ ლხინი ჰქონდა ძლიერი;

Even so is it hard to deal with the heart of a human being,
Ever embittered and maddened whether in joy or in sorrow.
It never knows peace or contentment but is prey to endless afflictions.
He is a foe to himself who confides and trusts in the world.

Tariel gazed at the writing of her for whom he was dying.
He read it again and again, though the reading increased his madness.
The tears that he shed blinded his eyes to the rays of the daylight.
Avtandil, troubled at Tariel’s behaviour, rose and said calmly:

“Tariel, my friend, such behaviour befits not a man who is prudent.
Why should we sigh and shed tears when now we must smile and be happy.
Rise, let usgo in quest of the maid whom the Kajis have captured.
Come, I shall show you the way; you with your prowess will free her.

“Joy now befits us; therefore, let us rejoice and be merry.
Come, let us mount and set out for the far-distant realm of the Kajis.
Let our sharp swords be our gUides to sheath in the backs of these Kajis.
We shall return in triumph, leaving their corpses behind us”.

Tariel asked for more tidings; he no longer languished or fainted.
As he looked up the jet and the white glittered bright like lightning.
And once again he shone like a ruby that bathes in the sunlight.
Who is so worthy that the sky ever gazes upon him in mercy?

Tariel conversed with Avtandil. thanked him heartily, saying”
“I am not worthy to praise you! Only the wise should commend you.
You, like a mountain spring have watered the flower of the valley.
From the narcissus pool the stream of tears flow no longer.

“No, I can never repay your service to me, my Avtandil.
May God who dwells in Heaven above bless and requite you!”
Thereat they mounted their steeds and galloped away rejoicing.
Now will the fires that are scorching Asmat be extinguished also.

ავთანდილ ცხენსა გარდახდა ასმათის მოსახვეველად;

ალვისა შტო-დამჭნარისა, მთვარისა ფერ-მიხდილისა;
უთხრა, თუ: “ნახე ნაწერი მის პატიჟ-გარდახდილისა;

ტერფით თხემამდის გაუხდა მას მეტი საკვირველობა;

ავთანდილ უთხრა: “ნუ გეშის, ეგე ამბავი მრთელია;

As they neared the cavern they saw Asmat sitting and weeping.
When she beheld the horsemen she started, thinking them strangers.
They were both singing so sweetly that her ears and soul were enchanted.
But when she knew them she rose, and hastily ran to meet them.

Till now he had always returned from his wanderings dejected and weeping;
Now to her utter surprise she beheld him merrily singing.
Joy intermingled with fear now gripped tile mind of the maiden.
A feverish giddiness rendered her weak and deprived her of senses.

They saw her and shouted loudly. They laughed and their teeth shone brightly.
“Asmat!” they cried, “God’s mercy has fallen upon us from Heaven.
We have, at last, found the moon; our hearts’ desire is fulfilled.
Now our fires will be quenched and our dirges all turned to rejoicing”.

Avtandil leaped from his horse and opened his arms to embrace her
Who cast herself in his arms; pliant to her touch was the cypress.
Thankful tears flowed down as she buried her face in his bosom.
“What have you learned, what news have you brought? Quick, speak, I implore you”.

Avtandil gave to Asmat Nestan’s letter to Tariel.
“She who is now a pale moon, a cypress with withering branches,
She who has passed through unspeakable troubles has written this letter.
See as the sun approaches how the shadows of night steal away”.

Asmat opened the letter and knew the hand of the maiden.
She was so astonished it seemed lightning had struck her.
And from her head to her toes a violent quivering seized her.
“Can it be true?” she cried, “What marvel is this Am I dreaming?“

“All I have told you is true”, Avtandil said to Asmat.
“Joy is now ours once again for God has sustained and blessed us.
Now that the sun is approaching there exists no darkness for us.
Evil is vanquished by good for the essence of good is enduring”.

ინდოთ მეფე მხიარული ასმათს რასმე უბრძანებდა;
ერთმანერთსა ეხვეოდეს, სიხარული ატირებდა;

ღმერთსა მისცეს დიდი მადლი, თქვეს: “გვიყოო, რაცა სჯობდა;

მე აგრე არა მინახავს, მართ ვითა არა მნდომია;

ჩნდის მარგალიტი, ოდენი ბურთისა საბურთალისა;

პოვეს ერთი ზარადხანა, აბჯრისათვის სახლად ქმნილი;

ჯაჭვ-მუზარადი ალმასი ხრმალი ბასრისა, მჭრელიო;

Thus did the King of the Indians and Asmat talk together.
Again they embraced one another; again their tears flowed profusely.
Dew lightly dropped on the rose from the outspread wing of the raven.
God forsakes not the man who endeavours his best and trusts Him.

Then they gave thanks to God for His aid and support in their trials.
Deeply and fervently prayed to the glory of God and His mercies.
Then, overwhelmed with their joy, they merrily entered the cavern.
Asmat prepared some refreshment and placed it gaily before them.

Tariel said to AvtandiI: “Listen to what I shall tell you,
For, dear friend, I will now disclose a secret to you.
I have related to you of my seizing these caves from the Devis.
The Devis are slain but their treasure is hidden within these caverns.

“I have not seen it, nor did I have the slightest desire.
But now let us open the vaults and see what is hidden within them”.
Gaily they rose and together with Asmat went to the storehouse.
They broke open forty locks, entered forty vaults.

They were astonished to see riches unequalled in value:
Diamonds, rubies and other rare jewels of exquisite workmanship;
There they saw chests of pearls, each as large as a ball.
As to the gold, it lay in glittering heaps beyond measure.

Each of the vaults was a treasure-house laden with countless riches.
One was a newly-built arsenal with armour and weapons of warfare.
These were arranged in array along the walls of the chamber.
But in a corner they saw a large unopened coffer.

On it was written in gold: “Here lies wonderful armour:
Helmets of chain, habergeons, adamant, steel-cutting sabres.
Woe to the Kaji who dares attack the impregnable Devi!
He who opens the coffer will slay and vanquish the monarch”.

ჯაჭვ-მუზარადსა, აბჯარსა მართ ვერა ვერ მოჰკიდიან;

თქვეს: “ესე ნიშნად გვეყოფის, ვართო კარგითა ბედითა;

ოქროც რამე წაიტანეს, მარგალიტი ღარიბები;

Quickly they opened the coffer, found the armour within it,
Three suits of newly-made armour that the best of warriors might wear.
Three coats of mail, three swords, three helmets, greaves and breastplates.
Each was enshrined in an emerald case that lit up the chamber.

Each clothed himself in the armour, chain helmet, greaves and habergeons,
Put on the sword that cut through iron as though it were cotton.
They felt indomitable courage and power pervade their bodies.
For nothing in the world would they have bartered that armour.

“This is” they said, “a sign of our, victory over the enemy!”
Lifting their hands to the heavens, they said: “O Lord, we thank You!”
Light flashed and lit up the cave as they fastened the clasps of their armour.
They bound with strong leather thongs the armour for Nuradin Pridon.

They took the armour for Pridon, and gold and jewels for the way.
Then they sealed the chambers filled with the wealth of the Devis.
“The time has come”, said Avtandil, “to fasten our palms to sabres.
Let us remain here till dawn and then set out on our journey”.
