AVTANDIL SETS FORTH IN QUEST OF THE KNIGHT

მაგრა მის მზისა გაყრამან სიცოცხლე გაუზიარა;

ახალმან ფიფქმან დათოვა, ვარდი დათრთვილა, დანასა;
მოუნდის გულსა დაცემა, ზოგჯერ მიჰმართის დანასა;

Wise Dionysius and Ezra, witness the truth of the saying:
It is sad when the rose in its beauty, fairer thpn Badakhshan ruby,
Is nipped by the chill blast of winter. And sadder till when the lover.
Wanders in dreary solitude, unable to find consolation.

Avtandil flew like the lightning over the plains of the Arabs,
Till he left its borders behind and rode in the lands of the strangers.
Widening the distance that lay between himself and the sun-maid,
Till the anguish of separation struck at the roots of his being.

Snow drifted down from the heavens, blasting the rose’s petals.
Longing to end his affliction, Avtandil lifted his dagger.
“I have left the world and Its pleasures, its music and song”, he murmured.
“Ninety and a hundred fold has the world Increased my sorrow”.

Deprived of the warm sun’s radiance the rose-leaves wilted and faded;
He did not fall by the wayside, but said to his heart: Be patient!,
Passing through strange habitations unknown to the hardiest traveller,
He greeted the lone wayfarer, striving to gather tidings.

He shed inexhaustible tears which flowed to increase the ocean.
To him the earth was a couch and his arms a pillow to sleep on.
“Though I am far”, he pondered, “my heart is with you, my beloved.
Death for your sake, my sun, is bliss I would joyfully welcome”.

Avtandil roamed the earth’s surface, he neglected no turning,
Sought in vain for tidings of him for whom he was looking.
Year followed year in its passage, the season appointed drew nearer,
Three short months lay before him to bring his quest to fruition.

He came to a desolate region, void of the children of Adam,
For thirty days he traversed it, and met not a single being.
The sorrows of Vis and Ramin were as nothing to all that he suffered.
By day and by night he was ravaged by the flames of despairing passion

ზედ წაადგა, შეექცევის, დროთა, დღეთა ანგარიშობს;
თვენი ესხნეს ორანიღა, ამად სულთქვამს, ამად იშობს;

On the slope of a frowning mountain he halted and rested his charger.
Below stretched an empty desert. a sevenday’s ride to the skyline:
At the foot of the mountain flowed a river that could not be bridged;
Both sides were covered with forests down to the water’s edge.

Avtandil halted to reckon the time that remained for his mission.
Sixty full days no longer! He had little cause for rejoicing.
There he remained for a while, lost in bitter reflection.
Who can turn evil to blessing? Destiny knows no denial.

“If I return empty-handed what shall I say to the bright one?
Must I confess I have wandered three long years to no purpose?
That I have brought no tidings of him I have sought the world over?
How can I come in her presence? How can I answer her questions?

“If I return not at all, once more I must start on my journey,
In search of the stranger-knight, resuming my hopeless errand.
When the time appointed has come, Shermadin, trembling and weeping,
Will enter the audience chamber, entreating the monarch to hear him.

“He will tell the king of my death, such were my parting injunctions.
There will be mourning and weeping. My people will think I have perished.
Can I, after travelling so long, return at last disappointed?”
Avtandil pondered long, and cried to God in his sorrow,

“Why have you turned from Your servant? How have I earned Your displeasure?
Why were my diligent efforts crowned with misfortune and failure?
Joy from my heart is uprooted, grief has sprung up to replace it,
My eyes are blinded with weeping, and my tears flow on like a river.

“Yet I will be patient, I will lift up my eyes to my Maker.
Without Him my struggles are useless, my tears and complaints unavailing.
That which will happen will happen; destiny’s hand is not halted.
And none can force into being that which is not to be.

მაგრა საქმე მის კაცისა ვერასადა შემიგნიან;

მას მინდორსა დაემართა, გზა თვალითა გამოსახა;

ცხენსა მისცა საძოვარი, ვირე წვადი შეიწოდეს;
ექვსნი რამე ცხენოსანნი, ნახა, მისკენ მოვიდოდეს;

“I have conversed with and met all living beings under heaven,
But not a soul have I met who could tell me some news of that stranger.
Doubtless they spoke the truth who called that horseman a Kaji.
Therefore as tears avail not why should I weep or be downcast?”

But he mounted his steed and descended, till he came to the bank of the river.
He pushed his way through the forest, and forded the threatening torrents,
The trees, and the roar of the waters fretted his weary spirit,
Humbled his pride and his power at the height of his youthful beauty.

But at the thought of returning he almost broke down in his anguish.
Groaning, he turned round his stallion, approached the plain at a gallop.
For a whole month he had travelled but no man had he seen or encountered,
And though there was plenty of game, he neither hunted nor slew it.

Though he was maddened with sighing, wild with heart-groaning and weeping,
Yet he grew hungry and weary after the wont of all mortals.
So he killed game with his arrow, with an arm that was stronger than Rostom’s;
Then he dismounted and kindled a fire on the edge of the forest.

While he was roasting the meat he let loose his stallion to pasture.
Suddenly far in the distance he saw six horsemen approaching.
Avtandil thought: “They are brigands. Who would come here but marauders,
Here in this desolate region where only wild animals wander?”

Taking his bow and arrow he rose and went forward to meet them.
Two elderly men were supporting and leading a beardless stripling.
The head of the youth was wounded, and from loss of blood he had fainted.
He was so pale and enfeebled that the men wept loudly in anguish.

Avtandil called: “Who are you I took you for brigands, my brothers”.
“Fear not”, they answered, “but help us, extinguish the fires that consume us.
Render us aid, if you can; if not, Afford us your pity.
Add your grief to our grief and make it as one with our sorrow”.

ავთანდილ მიდგა, ეუბნა მათ კაცთა გულ-მდუღარეთა;

Avtandil quickly approached and asked them the cause of their weeping.
“We are three brothers”, they answered. “Sorrow has fallen upon us”.
Weeping and inwardly groaning the men narrated their story.
“In the far realm of Cathay we are lords of a fortified city.

“Once we were told of a region where there were beasts in abundance
So we went forth with our soldiers till we came to a stream near a forest.
We know of no other region so delightful for hunting as this one.
For a month we enjoyed good sport, slaughtering beasts without measure.

“We three who are foremost in hunting shamed even the best of our archers.
Gaily we wrangled and sported, competed with one another.
We vied with each other. Declaring: ‘Not you but I shoot the better’.
No one could let fly a swift arrow as truly and deftly as we could.

“This morning we loaded our soldiers with deer-skins and sent them away.
We said: ‘Let us judge among us who is most skilful at shooting’.
So we remained alone eager to exhibit our prowess,
Needing no eye to be witness or to judge who excelled as marksman.

“Only three bearers of armour did we take along to attend us.
The rest of our host we dismissed, suspecting and fearing no danger.
Then with loud shouts and laughter we traversed vast plains and valleys,
Slaughtering beasts in great numbers and the birds that flew above us.

“Suddenly while we were hunting there appeared before us a horseman,
Gloomy and sullen of visage, seated upon a black stallion.
We were astonished to see him attired in the skin of a panther.
But to describe him is vain for beauty like his has no equal!

“We scarce could support the brightness that shone from the lustre he scattered.
Awed and amazed we exclaimed: ‘The sun is on earth. not in heaven!’
But we were daring and reckless and hastened forward to seize him.
This is the cause of our grief, the unrestrained tears we are shedding.

მე უხუცესმან უმცროსთა კაცი დავსთხოვე ქენებით;
ჩემმან შედეგმან ტაიჭი მისი თვით აქო ხსენებით;

უმცროსსა ძმასა მივეცით, უფროსნი დავეზიდენით;
ხელი მოჰკიდა, “დადეგო!”, ესეცა ჰკადრა კიდ ენით;

“I, as the eldest, wanted to leave the stranger alone,
But the younger had set his eyes on the raven-black horse as a keepsake.
We granted the youngest his wish to engage the stranger in combat.
Then we went towards the knight who approached us, calm in his beauty.

His cheeks of pale rose were embellished by glowing crystal and ruby.
He rode on in deep meditation and seemed not to see us approaching;
He paid no heed when we shouted but calmly and proudly rode onwards,
But when we shouted again he turned round upon us in fury.

“We elders kept back and the youngest advanced and made for the stranger.
Stand!’ he cried loudly, ‘Stand!’ and stretched out his hand to restrain him.
The knight had no sword so we halted and watched our brother engage him.
But with the swiftness of lightning he fell with his whip on our brother.

“He let his whip fall on our brother who fell deprived of his senses.
Blood streamed from his wound and crimsoned the meadow around him.
He who had been audacious was now prostrated and humbled.
Meanwhile that youth rode away lofty and proud in his beauty.

“He went on his way never stopping, majestic and stately in movement”.
“Look!” they suddenly shouted, “there is the sun in its brightness”.
Weeping, they pointed him out – a horseman far off in the distance,
Where they beheld the sun borne by a raven-black stallion.

Avtandil’s cheeks were no longer covered with unmelted snows:
God had not doomed all his labours but had answered his heart’s beseechings.
When the wish of a man is fulfilled and he finds the thing he has searched for,
He should cease from weeping and no longer brood on past sorrows.

“Brothers” he said, I have wandered from country to country to find him.
For him I have left my kingdom, for him I have left my kinsmen.
Now but for you I had lost all hope of finding him ever.
May the great God preserve you from all future troubles and sorrows.

რაცაღა არის, არ არის, თუმცა არ ედგნეს ბუდენი;

“As God put an end to my sorrows and befriended my cause and fulfilled it,
So may the Lord aid your brother and heal his wounds and restore him”.
Avtandil mounted his stallion and said as he showed them his refuge:
“Go, find repose in that shelter, refresh and recover your spirits”.

Then he set spurs to his courser and galloped away with the swiftness
Of the wild hawk that flies upward unhindered by string or by jesses,
Or like the moon that hastens to meet the glorious sunset.
The torturing fires that had burned him were now assuaged and extinguished.

As Avtandil drew near the horseman, he considered what course he should follow.
Hasty, ill-chosen phrases, enrage a madman but further.
A man with a quest to fulfil must be cautious of word and of action,
Must never lose presence of mind but curb his fire and be patient.

“Since that strange youth is so maddened that he suffers no man to approach him,
We would meet but to slay one another if I attempt to go near him.
We would engage in a combat, where one would indeed kiJI the other.
And what good would his death do me?” he communed with hImself as he journeyed.

“Why should the woes I have suffered be all unavailing?” he pondered.
“Even a bird has an eyrie and the beast some shelter to live in.
Wherever he goes I shall follow, though rock faces and forests conceal him.
Perhaps I shall find the balsam to assuage the pangs of my anguish”.

Two days and two nights they travelled, one pursuing the other.
Hunger and thirst were forgotten, and they were weary with riding.
Heedless of time they pressed forward, crossing vast plains and mountains.
They wept and their tears fell profusely, moistening the plains and the valleys.

After another day’s journey there rose a mountain before them,
A mountain lofty and rocky with a stream flowing beneath it.
Then on the third day at twilight they came to the edge of the stream
Flowing beneath great rocks in which were numerous caverns.

მან ყმამან ქვაბსა მიჰმართა, გავლნა წყალნი და კლდენია;

ერთმანერთსა ეხვეოდეს: ყმა ქალსა და ქალი ყმასა;

მას ყმასა შეჰხსნა, შეიღო აბჯრისა წელ-მორტყმულობა;

ქალი ტირს და მკერდსა იცემს, თმისა ტევრსა გაიგლეჯდა;
ერთმანერთსა მოეხვივნეს, აკოცა და ცხენსა შეჯდა;

Passing the trees and the stream the youth made his way towards the caverns.
Avtandil quickly dismounted, tethered his horse to a tree,
Climbed it and watched as the horseman wended his way to his shelter.
Now he could see from his perch that the youth was bitterly weeping.

The knight was approaching a cavern when Avtandil saw in amazement
A maiden attired in mourning come out of the cavern to meet him;
Giving free course to her tears she wept and loudly lamented.
The horseman dismounted his stallion and fondly and gently embraced her.

“Asmath”, he said to the maiden, “alas, our bridges have fallen.
Never, O woe! shall we find her; our hopes have crumbled ta piece”.
Weeping strangled his voice and he beat his breast in his anguish.
The maiden sank down and fainted. The youth wiped her tears and revived her.

The forest grew dense and the seas overflowed from the tearing of tresses.
Throwing her arms around him she strained the youth to her bosom.
Such was the wailing they uttered that the rocks re-echoed their voices.
Avtandil gazed in amazement on their frenzy, and depth of their sorrow.

The maiden was first to recover and compose her emotions and spirits.
Leading the horse to the cave she unbridled it, took off its harness;
Then she took off the armour and unbuckled the sword of the horseman,
Whereat they entered the cave and there they stayed until morning.

AvtandiI’s wonder increased as he watched from his perch in the branches.
When it was dawn the maiden came out alone from the cavern.
With her veil she furbished the bridle, then bridled the raven-black courser.
Then she returned to the cavern and noiselessly brought out the armour.

It was the custom, it seemed, for the horseman to leave in the morning.
When he appeared in the doorway she again tore her cheeks and her tresses;
Again they embraced one another; then he mounted and rode to the forest.
Asmat, repressing her groans, grew even more gloomy and downcast

ეყნოსა სული ალვისა, ქართაგან მონატაცისა;

შამბი გავლო, გაეშორა, თავი მინდორს გააგარა;

Avtandil saw once again the exquisite mould of his features.
“Truly”, he said to himself, “that knight is the sun of the heavens!”,
The air grew fragrant and sweet as the breeze brought the scent of the cypress.
Killing a lion was for him as is killing a goat for a lion.

The knight rode out the same road he had come by the day before.
He went beyond the rushes and made for the meadow beyond it.
Avtandil thought to himself as he gazed at the youth in amazement:
“I am thankful to almighty God for fulfilling my prayers and my wishes!

“Could I have fulfilled my desire if God had not helped and sustained me?
First I will capture that maiden, then force her to tell me his story.
I will also tell her my story, the truth of all that befell me.
Why should that swordsman and I slaughter each other in combat?”
