TARIEL TELLS HIS TALE TO AVTANDIL

“ისმენდი, მიეც გონება ჩემთა ამბავთა სმენასა;
საუბართა და საქმეთა ვისთა ძლივ ვათქმევ ენასა,
იგი, ვინ ხელ-მქმნის, მოველი მისგან აროდეს ლხენასა,
ვისგან შევუცავ სევდათა, სისხლისა ღვართა დენასა.

“ინდოეთს შვიდთა მეფეთა ყოვლი კაცი ხართ მცნობელი:
ექვსი სამეფო ფარსადანს ჰქონდა, თვით იყო მპყრობელი,
უხვი, მდიდარი, უკადრი, მეფეთა ზედა მფლობელი,
ტანად ლომი და პირად მზე, ომად მძლე, რაზმთა მწყობელი.

მამა-ჩემი ჯდა მეშვიდე, მეფე მებრძოლთა მზარავი,
სარიდან ერქვა სახელად, მტერთა სრვად დაუფარავი;
ვერვინ ჰკადრებდის წყენასა, ვერ ცხადი, ვერცა მპარავი;
ნადირობდის და იშვებდის საწუთრო-გაუმწარავი.

ხალვა მოსძულდა, შეექმნა გულს კაეშანთა ჯარები.
თქვა: “წამიღია მტერთაგან ძლევით ნაპირთა არები,
ყოვლგნით გამისხმან, მორჭმით ვზი, მაქვს ზეიმი და ზარები”;
ბრძანა: “წავალ და მეფესა ფარსადანს შევეწყნარები”;

ფარსადანს წინა დაასკვნა გაგზავნა მოციქულისა,
შესთვალა: “შენ გაქვს მეფობა ინდოეთისა სრულისა;
აწ მე მწადს, თქვენსა წინაშე მეცა ვცნა ძალი გულისა,
სახელი დარჩეს ჩემისა ერთგულად ნამსახურისა”.

ფარსადან შექმნა ზეიმი ამა ამბვისა მცნობელმან.
შესთვალა: “ღმერთსა მადლობა შევსწირე ხმელთა მფლობელმან,
რათგან ეგე ჰქმენ მეფემან, ჩემებრ ინდოეთს მპყრობელმან.
აწ მოდი, ასრე პატივ გცე, ვითა მამამან მშობელმან”.

ერთი სამეფო საკარგვად, უბოძა ამირბარობა.
თვით ამირბარსა ინდოეთს აქვს ამირ-სპასალარობა.
მეფე რა დაჯდა, არა სჭირს ხელისა მიუმცთარობა;
სხვად პატრონია, მართ ოდენ არა აქვს კეისარობა.

“Come, give heed to the telling of things surpassing all wonder,
Of deeds that have fettered my tongue that I scarce can give them expression.
Though I am maddened by love and completely prostrated by anguish,
Yet do I weep in vain and am doomed to agonized sorrow.

“You know, as every man knows. Of the seven great kings of India.
Parsadan. King of six kingdoms, was a powerful, generous monarch,
Known for his wisdom and might, a sun-faced. Lion-formed hero,
Ruler of kings and of armies, himself an invincible warrior.

“Lord of the seventh great realm was my father, the powerful Saridan.
There was no foe to be found who had courage to face or attack him.
For he had overcome all who had ever invaded the country.
Therefore, careless of fate, he spent all his time in diversion.

“But he was prey when alone to conflicting and gloomy reflections.
He thought: ‘By conquest I have enlarged and strengthened the armies.
Now I am seated in power in the midst of pomp and enjoyment.
Hence I will go and pay homage to Parsadan, King of the Indians’.

“Thereat he sent to Parsadan an envoy bearing a message.
He wrote: ‘O King over kings, great ruler and lord of all India,
Let me exhibit before you the strength of my heart and my prowess.
May my devotion to you – deserve your favour, great sovereign’.

“Parsadan hearing these tidings, ordered a great jubilation.
He sent a message to Saridan: ‘1 am grateful to God for His goodness.
You, who are also a king submit yourself to my service.
Come, I shall pay you due honour, like a dear parent or brother’.

“Then be bestowed on my father the lordship of one of the kingdoms,
Also the title of Amirbar the chief of the fleet and the armies.
Thus though my father was no longer absolute king of a kingdom,
Yet he was sovereign lord, mighty, revered and powerful.

თვით მეფემან მამა-ჩემი დაიჭირა სწორად თავსა.
თქვა: “ჩემებრი ამირბარი, ნაძლევი ვარ, ვისმცა ჰყავსა!”
ლაშქრობდის და ნადირობდის, აძლევდიან მტერნი ზავსა.
მას არა ვჰგავ ასრე, ვითა მე სხვა კაცი არა მგავსა.

ძე არ ესვა მეფესა და დედოფალსა მზისა დარსა,
ჭმუნვა ჰქონდა, ჟამი იყო, მით აეხვნეს სპანი ზარსა.
ვაჲ კრულია დღემცა იგი, მე მივეცი ამირბარსა!
მეფემ ბრძანა: “შვილად გავზრდი, თვით ჩემივე გვარი არსა”.

მეფემან და დედოფალმან მიმიყვანეს შვილად მათად,
საპატრონოდ მზრდიდეს სრულთა ლაშქართა და ქვეყანათად,
ბრძენთა მიმცეს სასწავლელად ხელმწიფეთა ქცევა-ქმნათად;
მოვიწიფე, დავემსგავსე მზესა თვალად, ლომსა ნაკვთად.

ასმათ, შენცა ხარ მოწამე ჩემისა ფერ-მიხდილისა,
მზესა მე ვსჯობდი შვენებით, ვით ბინდსა ჟამი დილისა;
იტყოდეს ჩემნი მნახავნი: “მსგავსია ედემს ზრდილისა”.
აწ მაშინდლისა ჩემისა სახე ვარ ოდენ ჩრდილისა.

მე ხუთისა წლისა ვიყავ, დაორსულდა დედოფალი”.
ესე რა თქვა, ყმამან სულთქვნა, ცრემლით ბრძანა: “შობა ქალი”.
დაბნედასა მიეწურა, ასმათ ასხა გულსა წყალი;
თქვა: “მაშინვე მზესა ჰგვანდა, აწ მედების ვისგან ალი!

ქება არ ითქმის ენითა, აწ ჩემგან ნაუბარითა.
ფარსადან დაჯდა ხარებად ზეიმითა და ზარითა;
ყოვლგნით მოვიდეს მეფენი ნიჭითა მრავალ-გვარითა.
საჭურჭლე გასცეს, აივსნეს ლაშქარნი საბოძვარითა.

საშობელი გაიყარა, ზრდა დაგვიწყეს მე და ქალსა.
მართ მაშინვე ჰგვანდა იგი მზისა შუქთა ნასამალსა.
ვუყვარდით და სწორად ვუჩნდით მეფესა და დედოფალსა.
აწ ვახსენებ, ვისგან ჩემი დაუდაგავს გული ალსა!”

“Parsadan deemed him his equal, paid him respect and honour.
He said: ”I wager no man has an Amirbar to equal Saradin’.
So they waged war and hunted, made peace with the foes they vanquished.
Though we were father and son yet to him I cannot be likened.

“The king and his sunlike queen had no daughter or son to succeed them.
And as time passed the armies were seized with alarm and were troubled.
O how I curse and deplore the day I was born to my parents!
As my son I shall rear and love him’, Parsadan said to my father.

“So I was reared by the king and his queen with care and affection,
Brought up as their son and heir and as lord of the fleet and the armies.
Wise men instructed and taught me the arts befitting a ruler.
To a lion in strength they compared me, and to the sun in appearance.

“You, my Asmat, have seen how my rose has turned into saffron.
Those who beheld me would say: ‘He is a nursling of Eden!’
I was compared to the sun as dawn is compared to darkness.
Compared to what I was then I am now a woebegone shadow.

“I was but five years of age when Parsadan’s queen became pregnant”.
Tariel sighed and groaned loudly: “She bore a daughter”, he whispered.
He would have fainted but Asmat sprinkled some water upon him.
“She for whom I am burning was the sun even them”, he continued.

“My tongue is too weak to describe the enchanting charms of her beauty.
The king celebrated the tidings with sumptuous feasting and revelry.
Kings came from distant countries bringing magnificent presents.
Gifts were so lavishly given that all were enrichened with treasures.

“Time passed and the maiden and I were brought up as brother and sister.
Truly the light of her rays augmented, the light of the sunrays.
The king and the queen loved us both and reared us alike as equals.
Now I will tell you her name, though the telling will certainly kill me”.

ყმა დაბნდა, რა სახელისა ხსენებასა მიეწურა;
ავთანდილსცა აეტირა, მისმან ცეცხლმან გულსა ჰმურა;
ქალმან სულად მოაქცია, მკერდსა წყალი დააპკურა.
თქვა: “ისმენდი, მაგრა ჩემი სიკვდილისა დღე დასტურ- ა.

მას ქალსა ნესტან-დარეჯან იყო სახელად ხმობილი.
შვიდისა წლისა შეიქმნა ქალი წყნარი და ცნობილი,
მთვარისა მსგავსი, შვენებით მზისაგან ვერ-შეფრობილი;
მისსა ვით გასძლებს გაყრასა გული ალმასი, წრთობილი!

იგი ასრე მოიწიფა, მე შემეძლო შესლვა ომსა;
მეფე ქალსა ვით ხედვიდა მეფობისა ქმნისა მწთომსა,
მამასავე ხელთა მიმცეს, რა შევიქმენ ამა ზომსა;
ვბურთობდი და ვნადირობდი, ვით კატასა ვხოცდი ლომსა.

მეფემან სახლი ააგო, შიგან საყოფი ქალისა:
ქვად ფაზარი სხდა, კუბო დგა იაგუნდისა თვალისა,
პირსა ბაღჩა და საბანლად სარაჯი ვარდის წყალისა;
იგი მუნ იყვის, მედების ვისგან სახმილი ალისა!

დღე და ღამე მუჯამრითა ეკმეოდის ალვა თლილი;
ზოგჯერ კოშკს ჯდის, ზოგჯერ ბაღჩას ჩამოვიდის, რა დგის ჩრდილი.
დავარ იყო და მეფისა, ქვრივი, ქაჯეთს გათხოვილი,
მას სიბრძნისა სასწავლელად თვით მეფემან მისცა შვილი.

სრა ედგა მოფარდაგული ოქსინოთა და შარდითა;
ვერვინ ვხედევდით, შეიქმნა პირითა მინა-ვარდითა;
ასმათ და ორნი მონანი ჰყვიან, იმღერდის ნარდითა;
მუნ იზრდებოდის ტანითა, გაბაონს განაზარდითა.

თხუთმეტისა წლისა ვიყავ, მეფე მზრდიდა ვითა შვილსა;
დღისით ვიყვი მას წინაშე, გამიშვებდის არცა ძილსა;
ძალად ლომსა, თვალად მზესა, ტანად ვჰგვანდი ედემს ზრდილსა,
სროლასა და ასპარეზსა აქებდიან ჩემგან ქმნილსა.

Even the thought of her name so affected the knight that he fainted.
Avtandil wept and hot fires burned his heart into ashes.
Tariel recovered when Asmat sprinkled his temples with water.
“This is the day of my death”, he said, “Can my heart bear the anguish?

“The royal princess was called by the name of Nestan-Darejan.
When she was seven years old she was a wise and beautiful maiden;
She was so radiantly bright that her lustre was brighter than sunrays.
Absence from her would soften even a heart made of forged iron.

“So passed the years. Nestan Was now a beautiful woman.
And I with my courage and strength was now fit to go forth to battle.
As she was the heir of the kingdom I returned to the home of my father
Where I spent all my time in the lists, in the arena or hunting.

Parsadan built for the maiden a palace befitting a princess.
Bezoar was used for stone, also cut jacinths ana rubies.
A fountain of rose-water flowed in a beautiful garden for bathing.
There dwelled the maiden for whom furnace of flames consumes me.

All day and all night cut aloes poured forth sweet fragrance from censers.
Sometimes she sat in the tower; sometimes in the garden at twilight.
Davar was Parsadan’s sister, a widow wedded in Kajeti.
She was entrusted the care and the training of Nestan, the princess.

“The palace was curtained with costly brocades and gold-woven fabrics.
No one had seen how her face had become rose-tinted and crystal.
She had Asmat and only two slaves; with them she played game of nardi.
There did that maiden grow like a graceful cypress of Gabaon.

“I was now fifteen years old. The king brought me up as a son.
I was more often with them than at home with my mother and father,
They called me lion in might, a sun, and a tree reared in Eden,
And I was exalted and raised for my feats in the lists and arena.

მოსრნის მხეცნი და ნადირნი ისარმან ჩემგან სრეულმან;
მერმე ვიბურთი მოედანს, მინდორით შემოქცეულმან;
შევიდი, შევქმნი ნადიმი, ნიადაგ ლხინსა ჩვეულმან;
აწ საწუთროსა გამყარა პირმან ბროლ-ბადახშეულმან!

მამა მომიკვდა, მოვიდა დღე სიკვდილისა მისისა;
ქმნა გაუცუდდა ფარსადანს ნიშატისა და ნიშისა;
მათ გაეხარნეს, ვის ზარი დაჰლევდის მისგან შიშისა;
ერთგულთა შექმნეს ვაება, მტერთა – ხსენება იშისა.

მე წელიწდამდის ბნელსა ვჯე საწუთრო-გაცუდებული,
დღისით და ღამით ვვაებდი, ვერვისგან სულ-დაღებული;
გაყვანად ხასნი მოვიდეს, მითხრეს მეფისა მცნებული,
ებრძანა: “შვილო ტარიელ, ნუ ხარ შავითა ღებული.

ჩვენ უფრო გვტკივის იგი, ვინ დაგვაკლდა სწორად თავისა”.
ასი ებოძა საჭურჭლე, ებრძანა ახდა შავისა,
ბოძება მისეულისა სრულისა საკარგავისა:
შენ გქონდეს ამირბარობა, ქმნა მისვე საურავისა.

ავენთი, დამწვეს მამისა სახმილთა დაუშრობელთა;
უკანის გამომიყვანეს ხასთა მათ წინა- მდგომელთა;
გამოსლვისათვის ზეიმი შექმნეს ინდოეთს მფლობელთა,
შორს მომეგებნეს, მაკოცეს პატივით ვითა მშობელთა.

მათ საჯდომთა ახლოს დამსვეს, პატივს მცემდეს ძისა დარად,
მის ხელისა საურავი მათ ორთავე მითხრეს წყნარად;
ურჩ ვექმენ და მისეულთა წესთა ქცევა მიჩნდა ზარად;
არ მომეშვნეს, დავჰმორჩილდი, თაყვანის-მცეს ამირბარად.

აღარა ვიცი, დამვიწყდეს, თუცა დიადი წელია;
გიამბო ჩემი ამბავი, განა რაზომცა ძნელია!
ცრუ და მუხთალი სოფელი მიწყივ ავისა მქმნელია,
მისთა ნაკვესთა წინწალი დამეცეს ხანგრძლად მწველია”.

“I was so skilled as a marksman that no beast could escape my arrow.
No one excelled me in games or in sport in the public arena.
Thus I diverted myself in feasting, diversions and pleasures.
Now fate has dissevered from me the crystal and ruby-faced maiden!

“My father expired to my grief, and to that of my mother and kingdom.
Parsadan grieved and lamented and festivities turned into mourning.
Foes who had trembled In terror now rejoiced and were humbled no longer.
The loyal deplored and recalled the reproaches and threats of the enemy.

“Giving myself to deep sorrow, I spent a whole year in mourning.
All day and all night I sat weeping knowing no comfort nor solace.
But at the year’s end Parsadan sent his nobles to me.
Tariel, my son,’ he wrote, ‘it is time to give over your mourning.

“‘We also deplore his death, lament the loss of our peer’.
He made me cast off my mourning, gave me measureless treasures,
Made me the lord and master of all my father’s possessions.
You shall be Amirbar now, be as true and devoted as he was’.

“Grief for my father inflamed me and I burned in unquenchable fires.
Yet I was led from the dark and conducted to light by the nobles.
The king and the queen with their hearts filled with joy came out to meet me.
Feasting followed my coming and the air resounded with revelry.

“They made me sit by their side as one would a son or an equal.
Gently they spoke of my duties before my people and country.
But it was painful to me to think of replacing my father.
But they insisted. I yielded, and bent before them in homage

“Years have passed since then and my brain is confused and clouded,
Yet I shall tell you the Whole of my tale though the, telling will kill me.
False is this world and delusive, the doer of bad and evil.
Sparks from its flint-like heart have kindled hot fires within me!”
