TARIEL’S DEPARTURE FOR KHATAETI AND THE GREAT BATTLE

დავაგდე ზღვარი ინდოთა, მევლო პაშტაი ხანია;

რაცა შეგცოდეთ, შეგვინდევ, თვით ჩვენვე შეგვინანია;
თუ ღმრთულებრ შეგვიწყალებდეთ, აქა ნუ მოვლენ სპანია;
ქვეყანა ჩვენი არ აწყდეს, რიხხვით არ დაგვტყდენ ცანია;

გვერდსა დავისხენ ვაზირნი, ვიუბნეთ, გავიზრახენით;

ლაშქარნი ახლოს გეკიდნენ, სცნობდენ ამბავსა კაცითა;

მეკეთა ესე თათბირი, ვაზირთა ნავაზირები;
შევსთვალე: ” რამაზ მეფეო, ვცან შენი დანაპირები;
სიკვდილსა გიჯობს სიცოცხლე, დაგვიდგამს ვერ ქვიტკირები;

“Early next morning I ordered the trumpets and drums to be sounded.
Host upon host fully armed stood ready and eager for battle.
Then with new ardour and strength we marched towards the enemy’s borders,
Mounted on swift-footed chargers, an army of valiant warriors.

“Just as we came to the marches, a man sent by Ramaz approached us.
He was the khan of the district, sent by his king with a message:
You, Invincible king, are truly a powerful monarch.
The goats of your land can devour the fiercest wolves of our country’.

“Then he laid at my feet an abundance of priceless treasures.
Do not destroy’ us’, he ‘pleaded, ‘have mercy upon us, O sovereign!
Lion of lions, we acknowledge your right and submit to your power.
Without resistance we will yield ourselves, our children and riches.

“’True, we have dared to oppose you, but will you not grant us your pardon?
Come with but few of your warriors to show us a mark of your friendship;
Hurl not your armies upon us, destroy not nor plunder our country.
Cities and castles and all we possess we place at your mercy’.

“I then assembled my viziers to discuss and take counsel together.
You are still young’, they said, ‘Hear then the voice of your elders.
Trust not this man for his lord Is perfidious – a seasoned deceiver.
We much suspect he is plotting to seize you and plunge us in sorrow’.

“I was counselled to do as follows: ‘Go forward with a few of your warriors,
But let an army of soldiers follow close behind you’.
I was to trust the foe if they solemnly swore to be loyal,
If not, I was told, to pour my wrath and heaven’s upon them.

“This was my answer: ‘King Ramaz, I gladly accept your proposal.
Wise is your choice. We come not to seize your forts or your cities,
To dwell in your country as conquerors, to seize and hold you in thraldom.
I shall approach you alone leaving my armies behind me.’

მუნით წასრული ჩამოვხე ტევრისა რასმე კიდესა;
კვლა მოციქულნი მოვიდეს, სალამად არ დამრიდესა;

თქვენი მესმა საღალატო, საცნობელად გამოვვარდი;

“I took three hundred soldiers with me, good, brave warriors,
And left behind me my army, but said before I left them:
Follow me wherever I Go over the fields and roads.
March closely behind me; come to my help if I need you’.

“After a three days’ journey another envoy approached us.
Making obeisance he placed magnificent raiment before me,
Saying: ‘King Ramaz awaits you, O proud and illustrious monarch,
Eagerly longs for the hour to pay his respects and homage’.

“These are his words: ‘O sovereign, hear me. And hearing, believe me!
Great is my longing to see you, therefore I hasten to meet you!’
Straightway I answered the envoy: ‘Gladly I hear the king’s message.
Tell him I hasten towards him, we shall meet like a son and a father’.

“Then we continued our way till we came to the edge of a forest
Where once again we were met by messengers bearing rich presents,
Jewels and treasures and horses, surpassing all others in beauty.
“Matchless monarch!’ they cried, ‘Kings would desire to behold you’.

“They said: ‘Our sovereign, King Ramaz will rise with the dawn on the morrow,
Leaving his palace at daybreak in his haste to accord you his greeting’.
Therefore, retaining the envoys, I bid my men to show favour
Unto the men from the Khan, and all slept quietly like brothers.

“Truly no benefit rendered passes away unrewarded:
One of King Ramaz’s men lingered behind for a moment.
I have a debt’ he said, ‘one to be paid all my lifetime,
And for this debt’s sake I cannot ever forget or forsake you.

“‘I was brought up when a youth in the court of your royal father.
I heard of the treachery planned, so I hastened at once to Warn you.
So listen, and I shall unravel the treason these men plot against you.
How could I bear to behold you, stretched, a corpse on the meadow?

ერთგან შენთვის დამალულნი სპანი ასჯერ ათასობენ;

მეფე ცოტათ მოგეგებვის, ვის მჭვრეტნი ვერ გელევიან;
მალვით ჩაიცმენ აბჯარსა, მიენდო, მით გეთნევიან;

“რომე არ მოვკვდე, შემოგზღო, შენ ამას ინატრიდია;

ქედსა რასმე გარდავადეგ, მინდორს მტვერი დავინახე;

“’Know that these men are all traitors sent by the king to deceive you.
One hundred thousand soldiers are waiting in ambush to seize you.
Can you with but three hundred men withstand the onslaught of thousands?
You are in danger. Be warned: I fear disaster awaits you.

“’Ramaz will come forth to meet you, whom none can forbear from admiring!
Trust not his flattering speech, he comes with an army behind him,
Raising great clouds of dust, thinking to take you by stealth,
Thinking with one mighty effort, one sudden attack, to destroy you’.

I was in debt to the man and thanked him for all he told me.
‘If I am not slain, I shall surely repay you for this’, I told him.
Now, return to your comrades, lest they find you gone and suspect you ..
– But if I ever forget you may God pour maledictions upon me.

“What I was told I kept secret, there was no time for discussion.
What was to happen would happen, I must act without counsel, alone.
I dispatched messengers quickly, bearing commands to my soldiers.
‘Hasten to me’, I enjoined them, ‘though the march will be weary and arduous’,

“Early next morning I sent through the envoys a courteous message:
‘Do not delay, o great King, and I will hasten to meet you!’
Then without more ado I rode on, regardless of comfort.
For who can escape his fate? Why, then, attempt to avoid it?

“Then I descried in the distance a cloud of dust from a valley,
And said to myself: ‘King Ramaz is spreading his net to entrap me.
Yet will I drive my sword into his treacherous bosom!
Calling my troops before me, I warned them what lay before them.

“Brothers!’ I cried, ‘the foe is secretly plotting to slay us.
Let not the terror of death weaken your arms, oh my brothers!
Remember, the soul of heroes, who lay down their lives for their country.
Are straightway carried to Heaven. Onward, then, to your glory!’

ვუბრძანე ჩაცმა აბჯრისა ლაღმან სიტყვითა ხაფითა;
დავეკაზმენით საომრად ჯაჭვ-ჯავშანითა, ქაფითა;

მივეახლენით, შეგვატყვეს მათ ტანსა აბჯარ-ცმულობა;
კაცი მოვიდა, მომართვა მეფისა მოციქულობა;

შევსთვალე, თუ: “მეცა ვიცი, რაცა ჩემთვის გაგიგია;

კვამლი შექმნეს ლაშქართათვის, დამალული გაამჟღავნეს;

შუბი ვსთხოვე, ხელი ჩავყავ მუზარადის დასარქმელად;
საომარად ატეხილი ვიყავ მათად გამტეხელად;

მუნ მივჰმართე მკლავ-მაგარმან, სად უფროსი ჯარი დგესა;

კაცი კაცსა შემოვსტყორცე, ცხენ-კაცისა დავდგი გორი;

“Then I commanded my troops to gird themselves for the battle,
Proudly I gazed on my soldiers, their weapons gleaming in sunlight,
Gladly I led their columns, marching behind me in squadrons,
Sure that my tempered blade would smite the foe and destroy him.

“As we advanced, no doubt they spied our glittering armour,
For swiftly a courser arrived, bearing this message from Ramaz:
If in friendship you come, why are these warriors in armour?
You have deceived us and we shall henceforth regard you as traitors!’

“Then I replied: ‘Am I blind to the snare you have laid for my footsteps?
Believe me, your traitorous schemes will never come to fruition.
Meet me in open battle, as is right between valorous warriors,
Taste the might of my sword, feel its invincible keenness’.

“such was the answer I gave to King Ramaz’s arrogant message
And straight from the billows of dust the enemy came out of ambush,
Marching in ranks from all sides, their armour shone in the distance,
Till they surrounded my troops but yet, God granted me victory.

“I seized my lance and my sword, donned my glittering helmet,
Roused by the fury of vengeance, eager to face my opponents,
Uttering a warlike cry, I spurred my horse ever onward,
Till I drew rein in silence, defying the hosts of the enemy.

“They viewed my approach with derision: ‘This is a madman’, they jested,
But with the might of my sword I clove a path through their army,
With one fierce stroke of my lance, I smote down a knight and his charger;
When the lance broke I drew my trusty blade from its scabbard.

“I swooped like a falcon that drops from the heights to the victim beneath him,
Man after man was smitten to earth by the force of my onslaught.
Bodies were piled upon bodies, as they fell to the might of my prowess;
Thus, single-handed, I fell on the foe and demolished his columns.

ერთობილნი მომეხვივნეს, მგრგვლივ შეიქმნა ომი დიდი;
ვჰკრი რასაცა, ვერ დამიდგნის, სისხლსა მჩქეფრსა აღმოვჰღვრიდი;

რა ეცნა, წამოსრულიყვნეს, ღამე-წამორთვით ეარა;

იგი ნახეს, გასაქცევლად გაემართნეს, შევჰკივლენით;

დაუწყეს პყრობა, ჩამოყრა შეშინებულთა, ძლეულთა;

ხელსა ხრმლითა დავეკოდე, წყლულად მაჩნდა, არ-ნაღებად;

ერთსა კაცსა ეყოფოდეს, დიდებანი რომე მჭირდეს;
ზოგთა შორით დამლოციან, ზოგნი კოცნად გამიპირდეს;

“They hemmed me in from all sides, but in vain they endeavoured to seize me;
None could withstand my attack, blood flowed like water from fountains;
Horsemen hung dead from their saddles, the ground was strewn with their corpses;
All who were left turned tail, fled from the field of battle.

“Just before sunset their watchman cried from the top of the mountain:
Fight there no longer! But fly! The wrath of God is upon us!
A terrible dust is approaching; tens of thousands of soldiers;
Who can confront such a number? Alas! They will surely destroy us!’

“It was the troops I had ordered to follow with all expedition.
Knowing no rest they had crossed plains and rivers and forests,
And now their myriad hosts covered the sides of the mountains;
They approached nearer and nearer with the sounds of drums and of trumpets.

“Panic was sown in the ranks of the foe by the sight of my armies.
Stricken with terror they turned and fled from the army advancing.
Ramaz the King was unhorsed with a single thrust of my sabre,
Nor was resistance made and all were routed and captured.

“Those who thought to escape were pursued and brought back by their captors.
Thus were the schemes of King Ramaz brought to nothing and shattered.
All our exhaustion and grief was forgotten in victory,
While the enemy’s wounded and dying lay groaning in pain and dejection.

“My troops dismounted straightway, loosed their chargers, and rested.
The wound I received was sore, but I did not think of my suffering.
My armies filed. Past my tent proclaiming my feats to the echo,
Seeking in vain for words to express their profound admiration.

“The praises they showered upon me were more than the share of a mortal.
The nearest rushed up to embrace me, the farthest shouted their blessings.
The veteran nobles who trained me exulted in laughter and weeping.
All combined to acclaim the heroic feats of my prowess.

მაშინღა შევე ხატაეთს მოვლად და მოსათვალავად;
კლიტენი საჭურჭლეთანი მომართვნეს დაუმალავად;

საჭურჭლენი გარდავნახენ თავის/თავის, კიდით-კიდე;
უცხო ფერთა საჭურჭლეთა, დავშვრები, თუ მოვსთვალვიდე;

ვისცა ვუჩვენი, უკვირდის, ღმრთისაგან თქვის სასწაულად;
არცა ლარულად ჰგდებოდა მას ქსელი, არც ორხაულად;

“I sent my soldiers to gather the spoils and trophies of battle.
They came back loaded with treasures, priceless, unblemished in beauty.
The plain was dyed with the blood of those who fought to destroy me.
And cities surrendered now with no more resistance or bloodshed.

“Then I said to King Ramaz: ‘I know of your base intentions.
You are cunning, perfidious. Be warned now, hear my injunctions;
Think not to strengthen the marches, or fortify cities and strongholds;
You are no longer the master, see you provoke not my anger!”

“Ramaz replied: ‘I acknowledge your right and submit to your power,
You are now lord of this land, with all its treasures and bounty.
Let me, I pray you, dispatch a noble to visit my cities.
Bidding the guards to surrender the keys of castles and strongholds’.

“So, with my leave, a noble attended by knights and retainers,
Sallied forth to the strongholds, and brought before me their rulers,
Delivering up the keys in token of deep submission,
Never had mortal eye beheld such abundance of treasures!

“Then we went forth to travel and Inspect the land of the Khatavians.
Publicly they gave me the keys of the treasury houses and castles.
I calmed the fear-stricken people who were beating their breasts in terror.
I will not destroy or kill you. The sun shall not burn you to ashes!’

We saw all the treasure-houses, examined the riches within them:
No words can suffice to describe the abundant wealth of the kingdom.
But even more did we marvel at a magnificent robe and mantle;
If you had but seen it, I know, You would not know what to call it.

“I could not learn what fabric it was, nor of what it was made.
Whoever saw it marvelled and said it was a miracle;
It was neither made of tissue like that of brocade. Nor of carpet;
Though soft it was strong as iron, as if it was tempered in fire.

იგი საძღვნოდ მისად დავსხენ, ვისი შუქი მანათობდა;

“I put it aside as a present for her who enlightened the world.
All who beheld it marvelled and said it was surely a miracle.
Then I sent heralds to Parsadan bearing the news of our triumph,
And a thousand mules and strong-footed camels loaded with riches.
