AVTANDIL’S GOING TO PRIDON’S WHEN HE PARTED FROM TARIEL

ყმა მტირალი სამოც-ათ დღე ზღვისა პირსა მივა გზასა;
შორით ნახნა მენავენი, მოდიოდეს შიგან ზღვასა;

გვეუცხოვე და გვეკეთე, მით გეუბნებით ქებითა;
აქამდის ზღვარი თურქთაა, მოზღვრე ფრიდონის ზღვებითა;

მოყმე მხნე, უხვი, ძლიერი, ფიცხლა მომხლტომი ცხენისა;

ყმამან უთხრა: “ძმანო ჩემნო, კარგთა კაცთა გარდგეკიდე;

მუნ დაგხვდების მეფე ჩვენი მშვილდ-ფიცხელი, მახვილ-ხრმალი;
აქადაღმა ათ დღე მიხვალ ნაკვთად სარო, ფერად ლალი;

ვისი ჰგავს ტანი საროსა და ვისი გული- რკინასა;

After a seventy day journey Avtandil came to a seashore.
Where at a distance he saw a ship just entering the harbour.
When the ship had cast anchor he asked of the merchants and sailors who landed:
“Tell me what kingdom is this and who is the monarch tltat rules it?”

They bowed before him and answered: “O incomparable stranger!
We are astonished to see such beauty of form and of face!
Your charms have dazzled our eyes and we can barely speak for amazement.
This Is the Turkish boundary, the marches of Nuradin Pridon.

“Pridon is king of this country, a potent and generous sovereign;
Heroic in strength and in prowess, respected and loved by his people.
None has the power to harm so good and mighty a monarch.
He is our patron whose rays spread out like sunbeams from heaven.

Avtandil said: “My heart rejoices to meet you, my brothers.
I have come from a distant country in search of your lord and sovereign.
Show me the way from here. How long is the road to his palace?
The sailors then showed him the way and told him to follow the seashore.

“This is the road”, they told him, “to the kingdom of Mulghazanzar,
There you will find our king, the invincible swordsman and hero.
You will reach his castle. O cypress, after a ten days’ journey.
Why do you kindle our hearts and leave us consumed by your fires!

Avtandil said: d marvel that you are ravished by me!
How can a withering rose frozen by winter delight you?
Had you but seen me before I became the wreck now before you!
Those who beheld me then witnessed the dawn of my beauty.

When they departed, Avtandil set out at once on his journey.
His heart was steeled in a furnace, his form was a cypress in Eden.
He strove to compose his emotions as he put his horse to a canter.
The narcissus poured fountains of tears over the crystal and enamel.

მულღაზანზარს მიეახლა, ადრე დაჰლევს გზასა გრძელსა;

მათ ლაშქართა ყოლბსა შუა ორბი სითმე გარდმოფრინდა;

მინდორსა შუა გორი დგა, ფრიდონ მას ზედა დგებოდა;
ღირსნი მას თანა სროლასა ორმოცი კაცი ჰხლებოდა;

Whoever he met on his way stopped to gaze and admire him.
Enraptered they followed his footsteps; they scarce could endure the parting.
All whom he met were enslaved by his charms and eager to serve him;
Zealous were they in their aid, pledging themselves to his service.

After a ten days’ journey he arrived in Mulghazanzar,
Where on a spacious plain hemmed in on all sides by soldiers.
He set eyes on an army of warriors enjoying good sport and hunting;
The air was rent with their shouts as they slaughtered the beasts in myriads.

Wishing to know who they were he inquired of a man he encountered:
“Whose is this sound of trampling, whose the shouts and the clamour?”
“It is Nuradln Pridon”, he answered, “ruler of Mulghazanzar,
Who has surrounded that plain and hunts with his army of soldiers.

Avtandil cast off his sorrows, gladly approaching the hunters.
How can I speak of his beauty, the grace of his form and demeanour?
Those who approached him were burned, those who parted were frozen.
The sight of his slender form could sting the senses to madness.

Suddenly an eagle appeared, high in the heavens above them,
AvtandiI urged on his steed, rode with the speed of an arrow,
Loosened a shaft as he rode and the eagle fell like a stone.
Avtandil leapt from the saddle, cut off its wings, and remounted.

When they beheld him the soldiers ceased shooting, and breaking the circle.
Eagerly hastened to him surrounding and pressing upon him.
Wonder increased the nearer they came, rendered blind by his brightness.
Awe-tied their tongues and they could do nothing but look on in silence.

High on the top of a hill overlooking the plain stood Pridon,
Attended by forty Warriors, forty unrivalled archers.
As Avtandil followed by crowds made his way to the hillock.
Nuradin, puzzled and vexed at his soldiers summoned a slave,

უთხრა: “მზე ვნახე მოსრული, ჩანს მანათობლად დღისისად;
ვაზრობ, იგიცა დაშმაგდენ, თუ ბრძენთა ნახონ ისი სად;

მონაქროლმან ვარდი დაზრა, წამწამთაგან ბუქი ბუქდა;

ფიცხლა იგი ქედი ჩავლო, ჩაეგება ფრიდონ წინა;
მას ჰმეტობდა, რაცა ქება მონისაგან მოესმინა;

მოეხვივნეს ერთმანერთსა, უცხოებით არ დარიდონ;
თვით უსახოდ ფრიდონს ყმა და მოეწონა ყმასა ფრიდონ;

მაგრა მას ახლავს ქებანი, მართ მეტი არ მიხჰვდებიან;

Despatched him at once to learn the cause of the noise and the tumult.
“Why have they broken the circle, why have they ceased from the shooting?”
Swiftly the slave reached the hosts, but on seeing the cypress-formed stranger
Stopped like one dazzled and stunned, forgetful of all he had come for.

Avtandil saw the slave and perceived he was sent there by Pridon,
He said to him: “Go at once with this message to Pridon your master:
I am a stranger newly arrived from a far-distant country,
Sent as an envoy to you by Tariel, who calls you his brother'”.

Straightway the slave went back to his king with the message he carried.
He said: “A sun has arrived to add to the light of our day.
Even the sage would be maddened, reft of his senses to see him.
He says that Tariel, your brother, has sent him to you as envoy”.

When Nuradin heard the name, his sorrows grew lighter and vanished.
Tears flowed down from his eyes as joy pervaded his being.
The joy froze the rose like a blast; from his eyes whirled snowstorms of tears,
As from afar he gazed admiring and praising the stranger.

Nuradin quickly descended the hill, impatient to meet him;
And when he saw him he thought: “No sun can be likened to him!”
Avtandil outdid the praise Pridon had heard from his servant.
Wetted in tears their eyes as the lions swiftly dismounted.

Then they advanced and embraced as brother embraces brother.
They felt joy in their hearts as they gazed admiring each other.
Eyes would despise and turn from the sun on seeing these heroes.
Slay me if heroes like these can be bought or sold in the market!

Peerless and noble is Pridon, unequalled for beauty and valour,
Yet he cannot be likened to Avtandll’s radiant splendour.
Under the light of the sun planets were dimmed and extinguished.
Candles shine brightly at night but by day their lustre is fainter.

დაიშალა ნადირობა, მოეშალნეს მხეცთა სრვასა;

დღესა ერთსა მეფე შეჯდა, ნადირობას გამოვიდა;

მეფემან სპანი შეპყრობად შეუზახნა და წყრებოდა;
ზოგსა მხარ-თეძო დაჰლეწა და ზოგთა სული ჰხდებოდა;

They mounted their horses again and set out for Nuradin’s palace.
The hunting was put to an end, and the slaughter of beasts in the plain.
Straight from all sides came the soldiers, all eager to see the stranger.
“Surely”, they said, “no creature no earth excels him in beauty”.

Avtandil said to Pridon; “I know you desire to hear me,
Are eager to know who I am and where I come from, my Pridon,
Eager for tidings of him who speaks of you as his brother
Though he calls me his brother, I am worthy to be but his slave.

“I am King Rostevan’s vassal, born and reared in Arabia,
Grand Commander-in-chief of all the hosts of Arabia,
I come of a noble family, was brought up by the king as his son,
Avtandil is my name, and none has ever defied me.

“Once while hunting we saw a knight on the bank of the river.
It was Tariel watering the plain with the tears he was shedding profusely.
We were astonished and angered when he came not to Rostevan’s summons.
We knew not that fires burned within him, devouring the roots of his being.

“Rostevan, highly incensed, commanded his soldiers to seize him;
But with one blow of his whip he slaughtered and slashed them to pieces.
Some he despatched outright, others he mortally wounded.
We learned that no force could divert the course of the moon from its orbit.

“When Rostevan saw how the knight had destroyed his valiant warriors,
He instantly mounted his horse, pursued him with furious swiftness.
But when Tariel turned, saw the sovereign riding behind him
He quickly gave the reins to his horse and was lost to our eyes.

“We searched for that knight in vain; we could find no trace nor footprint.
The king was distressed and forbade revelry, sporting and feasting.
I was impatient too, to learn some news of the stranger.
So I secretly left one day with smouldering fires in my bosom.

მათ მასწავლეს, ხატაელნი ვნახენ მისგან დაკოდილი;

მის ყმისა ცეცხლი მედების, დამწვა ცეცხლითა მისითა;
შემებრალნეს და გავშმაგდი, გავხე ცნობითა ვისითა;
მომინდა მისთა წამალთა ძებნა ზღვითა და ქვიშითა;

დავყარენ ჩემნი ლაშქარნი, მით იზახიან მუნ ვასა;

“Vainly I searched the world three long years for the stranger,
Till I encountered some warriors, the Khatavians he had mauled.
I found him at last but the rose of his beauty was faded and drooping.
As a brother welcomes a brother, so did he make me welcome.

“He had seized the caves from the Devis in a contest both bloody and fearful,
And there he dwelt with Asmat, alone in the desolate cavern,
Consumed by unquenchable fires, ceaselessly weeping for Nestan.
And we who are absent from him, what can we do but mourn him?

“Asmat sits weeping alone, while Tariel hunts in the forest,
Brings back game for her nurture as the lion succours its young ones.
Restless he roams the plain, ever pursued by his sorrow,
Wishing to see none other but Asmat, his companion in pain,

“He told me the tale of his sorrows, he opened his heart to a stranger.
Spoke of his love for a maiden, and of all the disasters it brought him.
Should I relate the afflictions showered on the heads of these lovers,
You would think I was mad. None could believe such a story!

“Wandering over the earth as the moon roams over the heavens,
He never dismounts from the charger, the steed that he owes to your bounty.
As the wild beast hides from the hunter, he shrinks from the face of mortals.
It is painful to remember that knight dying for her whom he worships.

“I, too, am consumed in that furnace consuming the bosom of Tariel.
My heart was maddened by pity, my only desire was to help him.
I roamed over land and ocean, but found no balm for his sorrows,
And at last I returned to my sovereign, and found him nursing his sorrow.

“The sovereign heard with displeasure my plea to depart once again.
Therefore I stole frem my soldiers, deaf to their grievous lamentings.
I departed but left behind me an ocean of tears of blood.
And now by land and by water I seek a cure for his sorrows.

აწ ფრიდონ იწვის სიტყვითა მის ყმისა ნაუბარითა;

რა მოგეშორვე, მას აქათ სიცოცხლე მომძულვებია;
თუცა შენ ჩემად არა გცალს, მე შენთვის მომსურვებია;

ფრიდონ თქვნა ესე სიტყვანი მოთქმითა შვენიერითა;

სახელმწიფოთა ყოვლითა გასაგებლითა სრულითა;

“He told me of you and the oaths of eternal friendship you swore,
I find you a peerless knight, worthy of praise and of homage.
Give me, therdore, your counsel, tell me where I may find her
Whose presence bestows a blessing, whose absence is most bitter torment”.

Avtandll’s every word seemed to burn into Pridon’s soul.
They both lamented loudly in a threnody worthy of praise.
They wept with maddened hearts as sobs burst forth from their bosoms.
The roses were sprinkled by the water of tears dammed up in the jungle.

A clamour of sobbing and groaning rose from the ranks of the soldiers;
They tore at their flesh in distraction, ripped their garments to ribbons.
Pridon loudly lamented the seven long years’ separation.
World, you are cruel and fickle, deaf to the cries of a lover!

“How shall we sing your praises, your matchless worth and your beauty?
You are the sun of our earth, you have stolen the sun from our heavens.
The planets have borrowed your radiance, the firmament shines in your lustre,
Tariel, lamp in our darkness. cheerless in life in your absence!

“Since I was parted from you, my life had become but a burden;
You have no time to remember the friend who can think of no other.
You can be happy without me, my absence does not oppress you.
But for me the world is a desert, if I may see you no longer”.

The music of Pridonts lamenting rose like a dirge to the heavens,
And sank Into silence again as the friends rode on without speaking.
All who beheld were amazed when they looked upon Avtandil’s beauty.
The jet black lakes of his eyes were hid by their lowered lashes.

When they arrived at the city they found a magnificent palace,
Ministers seated in state, and slaves richly apparelled.
They entered the spacious court; and all who beheld them were ravished
By Avtandil’s beauty and grace and the knightly figure of Pridon.

იქით-აქათ დიდებულნი წარიგებით ათჯერ ათი;

დღეს წაუვალი ვერა ვარ, მით ცეცხლი სხვაცა მწვიდესა;
დგომა მგზავრისა ცთომაა, კარგსა იქმს, თავსა სწვრთიდესა;

ფრიდონ უთხრა: “დასაშლელი ჩემგან არა არ გეთხრობის;

Ten times ten were the nobles ranged each side of the tables.
Pridon and Avtandil sat surrounded by magnates and nobles.
Never before were such beauty and such youth assembled together!
Jet and ivory decked their faces of crystal and ruby.

They sat and banqueted gaily on choicest of viands and liquors.
As a kinsman treats a kinsman, thus was Avtandil treated.
Merrily passed the hours in the pleasures of feasting and drinking,
But Avtandil wounded the hearts of all who looked on his beauty,

Thus they feasted till sunset; the hall resounded with laughter.
It was dawn when the guest was led to a bath of sweet-scented water.
They dressed him in rich and magnificent robes as befitted his beauty.
And tied round his waist a girdle flashing with rubies and jewels.

Though he was anxious to leave, he yet remained some days,
Hunted with Pridon and sported, slaying what came within bowshot.
Many a beast perished, pierced by shafts from his quiver,
No other archer could rival Avtandil’s skill as a marksman.

When he could stay no longer, Avtandil said to Pridon:
“Parting from you will be grievous, yet I must leave you, my brother.
Another fire consumes me, an urgent task is before me.
Long is the road I must travel, short the time for achievement.

“Who shall rebuke me for weeping on leaving my friend of friends?
But the moment has come; today I must start on my journey.
One who has vows to fulfil and a quest to achieve may not tarry.
I only ask to be led to the shore where you saw that maiden”.

“I will say or do nothing, said Pridon, “to hinder you going Avtandil.
I know the lance that has pierced you, I will not delay your departure.
May God in Heaven direct you, may your enemies all be confounded!
But who will teach me to bear the anguish of long separation?

ამას გკადრებ, არ ეგების მარტოსაგან წასლვა შენი;

ერთსა ჯორსა წვივ-მაგარსა საგებელი აუკიდა;

მოატყდეს მოქალაქენი, ლარსა ვინ ჰყიდდა, თუ ხილსა;

კბილ-თეთრი, ბაგე-ბადახში, სახედავითა შავითა;

“Why should you travel alone without anyone to attend you?
Let four of my bravest warriors accompany you on your journey.
I will provide you with all you will need on your arduous journey,
For the road you must travel, my friend, is long and beset with dangers”.

He sent for the four brave soldiers, each of them fully accoutred
With helmet and buckler and arm piece, greaves and sabre and lances.
He added to all his bounty a purse full of gold and of silver.
And brought a peerless stallion, for Avtandil’s use on the journey.

A strong-limbed mule was loaded with bedding and food for the way.
Nuradin went with his friend for the space of a one day’s journey.
He bitterly groaned in spirit at the thought of parting from AvtandiI.
“No winter could freeze us”, he wept, “beneath the warm beams of the sun”.

The people were stricken with grief by the rumour of Avtandil’s going;
The traders gathered together, the sellers of silk and of fruit;
The voice of their mourning resounded like the rumbling of distant thunder.
“Our sun is departing”, they moaned, “and the light of our eyes is extinguished”.

They left the city behind them and rode till they came to the sea,
Where Pridon had seen the sun-maid, a captive of two fierce negroes.
The two reined up their horses and mingled their tears with the waters.
And Pridon repeated the story of the shining captive’s affliction.

“Two huge negroes were rowing a boat to the edge of the seashore,
A sunbright maiden sat in it, lovely of face and of figure.
I spurred my horse to meet them. They saw me and fled to avoid me.
The boat flew over the waves as an eagle flies from the archer”.

Embracing and weeping, they parted; the flames in their hearts burned more fiercely
Brothers more close than two friends. Friends more dear than two brothers.
Pridon remained behind, Avtandil resumed his journey;
The beauty that slew the beholder at last disappeared from man’s vision.
