THE GOING OF TARIEL TO THE KING OF THE SEAS

შესთვალა: “მოვალ ტარიელ, მტერთა მძლე, მოსრვით მსპობელი;
ქაჯეთით მოყავს ჩემი მზე, ჩემი ლახვართა მსობელი;

აწ მე მაქვს ქაჯთა ქვეყანა და მათი დანადებია;
მეფეო, კარგი ყველაი მე თქვენგან წამკიდებია;

გამოგზავნოს, ეამების ნახვა მისი ხსნილსა მისსა;

მას მიაქვს რიცხვი ტურფათა, არ-სიდიადე სათისა;
ფატმან ჰყავს თანა, იარა სავალი დღისა ათისა;

გარდახდეს, მდაბლად აკოცეს, გა-რე-სწყდეს ჯარსა სპათასა;

Tariel sent to the King of the Seas the following message:
“Tariel, the vanquisher of foes, their destroyer and slayer is coming
And brings the bright sun, the piercer of hearts from the realm of the Kajis.
He wishes to pay his respects to you as son to a parent.

“I have subdued the Kajis, seized aU their land and their riches.
For all the good that is mine, I am grateful to you, your highness.
I am also indebted to Patman who helped the sun when afflicted.
What can I do in return for the good you and Patman have done me?

“Render us happy by coming to us before our departure.
I wish to give you, my lord, the lands and the wealth of the Kajis.
Hence let your soldiers come here and be posted as guards of the castle.
I cannot delay much longer so make haste and appear before us.

“On my behalf tell Usen, Patman’s husband, to send her.
The sight of that dame will delight and give joy to the sun-faced maiden.
Whom else can Patman desire to see more than her whose radiance.
Even like crystal compared to black pitch is brighter than sun rays?”

The King of the Seas rejoiced to receive this message from Tariel.
Such joyous tidings startle the heart yet fill it with rapture.
First he gave thanks unto God, exalting the might of His Goodness.
Then he mounted his horse with all haste, and set out on his journey.

He took many horses along heavily laden with presents,
Measureless gifts of beautiful things, rich fabrics and jewels.
After a ten days’ journey, he at length arrived in Kajeti.
The thought of beholding the sun and the lion made him rejoice.

When the three heroes beheld him they quickly dismounted their horses.
And hastened forward to meet and welcome the King of the Seas.
Warmly they greeted each other and praised the prowess of Tarlel.
Rapture lit up the face of the King at the sun-maid’s appearance.

მოეხვია, გარდუკოცნა ხელი, ფერხი, პირი, ყელი;

ქაჯეთიცა დაუმადლა, არ გაუშვა დღესა შვიდსა;

მუნ იდვის გორი ლარისა, სტავრისა და ატლასისა;

Slow fires consumed Patman when she saw the rays of the crystal.
Pressing her close to her breast, she covered her face with kisses.
She said: “O God, you have turned into light the darkness around me.
Now do I see how short-lived and weak is the power of evil!”

Nestan embraced her and said in a gentle and love-laden voice:
“God has enlightened and healed my darkened and grief-stricken heart
Which now no longer is sad but is full and resplendent with lustre.
The rose freezes not when the sun sheds its life-giving rays upon it”.

The King of the Seas celebrated an exceedingly sumptuous wedding.
He was indebted to’Tariel for the gift of the realm of the Kajis.
He loaded the treasure and lavishly dispensed rich treasures to all.
They walked on the scattered gold as if it were a bridge.

There stood a mountain of silk, brocade and the richest of fabrics.
No price could be set on the beautiful crown he bestowed on Tariel;
It was made of one single jacinth which glittered brighter than sunbeams,
There was likewise a throne of red and refined gold.

Then to the maid he gave a mantle adorned with rare jewels,
Badakhshan rubies and jacinths that glowed like smouldering fires.
And as they gazed on the two whose faces dazzled like lightning,
They were entranced and their hearts were rekindled with soul-melting fires.

The king gave to Pridon and Avtandil countless valuable presents.
An excellent horse with a richly bejewelled bridle and saddle,
On each he also bestowed a mantle covered with jewels.
“What thanks can we utter!” they said, “May your days be long and prosperous!”

Tariel also expressed his thanks to the King of the Seas:
I am honoured, O King, and glad in my heart to see you.
You with your bounty have filled us with costly and measureless presents.
We are indebted to you for the honour you have done us”.

ტარიელ ფატმანს უბრძანა: “მე თავი შენი მიდია;
დავ, ვალი შენი ჩემზედა გარდაუხდელი, დიდია;

“მე მეფეო ნახვა შენი მიდებს ცეცხლსა დაუშრეტსა;

კვლა ამტკიცებდეს სიტყვათა, მათ პირველ დანამტკიცართა;

The King of the Seas answered: “O mighty and lion-like sovereign,
Absence from you means death, for your presence gives birth to new life.
What can I give you, what treasure is there that is worthy of you?
How can I live, O lion, if my eyes behold you no longer?”

Tariel said to Patman: “I adopt you as sister, my Patman;
I can never repay the inestimable debt l owe you.
Now I have brought from the Kajis, costly and valuable riches.
Take them. I give them to you as a mark of my boundless gratitude”.

Patman bent low before Tariel, thanked him heartily, saying:
“Parting from you, O King, makes me burn with unquenchable fire.
What shall I do when distant from you? Longing will slay me!
Blessed are they who are near you, but worse than death to be parted”.

The three dazzling heroes now spoke to the revered King of the Seas.
Their snow-white teeth glowed like crystals, their lips like pearl-tinted rubies.
“Though separation from you will deprive us of joy”, they told him,
“And silence the sound of merriment, yet it is time to leave you”.

“Be, O great King, our hope, our father and best-beloved parent.
One thing we ask you: Give us a ship to return to our country”.
“For you”, said the king, “I would gladly make the grave my abode.
Since you must go, then go. Let your arms and your heart be your guide”.

The king fitted out a ship. The heroes embarked and set sail.
Those who remained behind bitterly mourned the parting.
They beat their heads with their fists, tore their hair and cast it away.
Patman’s tears in their unceasing flow augmented the ocean.

The brothers, invincible heroes, crossed many a sea together.
They confirmed with words the vow they had formerly plighted;
And as they sailed, the skies resounded with laughter and merriment.
Rays from their smiling lips captured the glow of the crystal.

მიყმაწვილობდეს, უხარის მათ გარდახდომა ჭირისა;

ნესტან-დარეჯან ეხვევის, პირსა აკოცებს პირითა;
აწ ღმერთმან მოგვცა წყალობა, ვცან, მისი არ-სიძვირით-ა;

But they despatched a messenger to carry the tidings to Asmat,
Also to Nuradin’s realm, to the chiefs of the royal armies:
“The sun who invests the planets with prolific rays is coming.
The frost that shrivelled and froze us to ice wlll freeze us no longer”.

They seated that radiant sun in a palanquin when they landed.
They were as gay as children, glad that their sorrows were over.
After a happy journey they came to Nuradin’s kingdom
Where they were welcomed with songs and a flourish of trumpets and cymbals.

They were received by Nuradin’s nobles with plaudits and homage.
Asmat, with countenance gleaming, with joy ran forward to Nestan.
Locked in each other’s arms it seemed no force could unloose them.
She had fulfilled her service; all trials and suffering were ended.

Nestan-Darejan tenderly kissed and caressed the maiden.
“My dear”, she said, “I have filled you, alas, with grief and affliction.
Now that the Lord has granted us grace I acknowledge His mercies.
But can I ever repay a heart like yours, my Asmat?”

“Thanks be to God”, said Asmat, “that I see the roses unfrozen.
That which was hidden and lost was revealed by courage and wisdom.
Death itself seems to me life when I see you happy.
Better than love of friends is the love of a lord and his vassal!”

The nobles and lords did homage and showered praises upon them.
“Blest is the Lord and His Divinity since He has made us rejoice?
He has shown us your radiant face. No longer do fires consume us.
He who inflicted the wound had the balm to soothe and heal it”.

They made profound salutation, kissed their hands and embraced them.
Tariel said: “For our sake your brothers have died in the battle.
They hold communion with God, have attained everlasting happiness.
Now are their glories increased a hundred times twentyfold more.

რაცა ვისცა დაჰკლებოდა, მათ ტირილით, სულთქვმით ახეს;

ავთანდილცა მიუმტკივნა, იტყვის დიდსა სიმძიმილსა;

მივიდეს, სადა ქალაქი დიდი მულღაზანზარია;

შუკათათ მოდგეს ვაჭარნი, ყოვლგნით მჭვრეტელთა ჯარია;
შორს უარებდეს სარანგნი, ხელთა აქვს მათ აბჯარია;

“Their death has afflicted us sorely and we bitterly weep and mourn them.
Yet they are now with the blessed having reaped immortal inheritance”.
Tariel wept and the rain of his tears was commingled with snowflakes.
Narcissi trembled as Boreas blew and the rose was frozen.

Seeing Tariel in tears they all fell to weeping grievously;
Whoever had lost a kinsman moaned and lamented loudly.
Soon all were hushed. They said: “Why should we weep, O Tariel?
We should be gay and happy since we can look upon you!

“Who among mortals is worthy of the tears you shed?” they asked him.
“Death for your sake is far better than being alive without you!”
“Why do you weep and embitter yourself?” said Pridon to Tarlel,
“May God in return bestow a thousand joys upon you!”

Avtandil also expressed his condolence In sorrowful phrases.
But there arose acclamations: “Let us now smile and be happy.
Since the lost lion has found the lost sun why should we grieve?
We will no longer let tears flow down from our eyes in streams”.

Then they all went to the beautiful city of Mulghazanzar
Where they were hailed by the people with shouts of joy and of welcome.
The sound of the drum and trumpet blended with that of the clarion.
The inhabitants heard them approach and at once left their houses to meet them.

Leaving their shops the merchants hastened to greet their arrival.
Every window, roof and street was thronged with crowds of spectators;
And it required the utmost exertion of well-armed officers
Who were drawn out in lines on the road to prevent disorder.

When they arrived at Pridon’s palace the heroes dismounted.
A carpet of gold brocade was spread for them to walk on.
Richly clothed slaves with girdles of gold threw gold in the air.
Which resounded with shouts as the crowd picked it up in heaps and in handfuls.
