AVTANDIL’S REQUEST TO KING ROSTEVAN AND THE VIZIER’S DISCOURSE AND ENTREATY

რა გათენდა, შეეკაზმა, ყმა გავიდა ადრე გარე;

ყმა გარდასვა მასპინძელმან, არ ღაფალმან, ავმან, უქმან;
ყმამან სახლი გაანათლა, ვით სამყარო მზისა შუქმან;

ეტყვის: “შენი დამალული დარბაზს არა არ იქმნების;

მის ყმისა ცეცხლი მედების, წვა მისისა მჭირს მწველისა;
მკლავს სურვილი და ვერ-ნახვა ჩემისა სასურველისა;
მას ჩემთვის სულნი არ ჰშურდეს შეზღვა ხამს შეუზღველისა;

მუნვე დარჩა, დათმობაცა მას თანავე დაება, და -;

Next morning Avtandil rose, attired and mounted his courser.
He prayed to the Lord: “O God! Give strength to my heart for endurance,
Strength to conceal my wound for I would that my love be hidden”.
Thus absorbed in his thoughts he went to the house of the vizier.

Sograt was told of his coming. “The sun has risen above us!
Truly, this day betokens great joy to my house”, said Sograt.
Then he saluted his guest with homage befitting an emperor.
He who is dear to the host is a welcome and honoured guest.

Sagrat, with marks of great gladness, helped the knight to dismount.
Under Avtandil’s feet a carpet was laid to walk on.
The youth illumined the house as the sun illumines the heavens.
They said: “The breeze has wafted to us the fragrance of roses”.

Avtandil seated himself before an admiring assembly.
All who beheld him stood spell-bound, so dazzled were they by his beauty,
And in the transports of joy their spirits sank, happily swooning.
But the vizier told them to go and leave him alone with Avtandil.

When all had dispersed to their homes Avtandil said to Sograt:
“Nothing is hidden from you, O reverent vizier and counsellor!
Even the king yields to you and Is ruled by your wisdom and counsel.
Cure me, I pray, and assuage the pain of my wound, and heal it.

“I am consumed by the fire that is burning that swordsman to madness.
My tonging to see him again is torturing me to distraction.
Know, he would yield up his life for the sake of our love and friendship.
Can I betray him, my Sograt, begrudge him my life or my service?

“I was trapped as in a net and caught when I first beheld him.
Though I am here before you, yet my heart is with him.
Like the bright sun he burns and dazzles all who approach him.
The maiden with him is dearer to me than even a sister.

AVTANDIL’S REQUEST TO KING ROSTEVAN AND THE VIZIER’S DISCOURSE AND ENTREATY

“კვლა მოვალ, გნახავ პირითა არ მტერთა საწუნელითა;
შენსა მე ვეძებ ნათელსა, შენ ხარ გულითა ბნელითა”;

მიმელის და ვერ მისრულ ვარ, ესე მიდებს ცეცხლსა ცხელსა;

რაცა გითხრა, ჩემ მაგიერ როსტანს ჰკადრე, მიედ სრასა;

აწ, მეფეო, უმისობა ჩემგან ყოლა არ ეგების;
თუ რას ვარგებ, პირველ ხვალმე თვით სახელი თქვენ მოგხვდების;

წასლვა ჩემი გულსა თქვენსა არ ეწყინოს, არ დაჭმუნდეს;
თავსა ჩემსა გაგებული იქმნას, რაცა ღმერთსა უნდეს;

წა, ესე ჰკადრე მეფესა, შე- ვინ -ვიდოდეს ვირეო;

“When I departed from him I gave him a sacred promise:
I swear by my sun and by Heaven to return and never forsake you!
For you of the darkened heart I shall seek that light-shedding maiden”.
The time for departure has come, therefore I leave you, my Sograt.

“All that I tell you is true. This is the cause of my leaving.
Tariel awaits me. Can I, who is mad, abandon a madman?
I would sooner yield up my life than relinquish the pledge I have given.
Cursed is the man who betrays the solemn oath of friendship!

“Go now, report to his majesty all I have told you, my Sograt,
Plead my cause well with the monarch, O wisest of viziers, I pray you.
Though he is absolute sovereign yet I will go though he chain me!
Help me! Let not the fires that are searing my heart destroy me!

“Tell him from me: ‘O King, let all who have tongue exalt you!
God knows that anguish I feel, that I am the cause of your grievance.
I was burning for him, for that youth with the form of a cypress.
He has fettered my heart to his own; I was powerless to withhold it.

“’What is existence without him?- one endless torture, your highness.
Of what avail am I here, deprived of my heart and reason?
If I am of service to him, then to you will the glory belong.
Happen what may I must go. I am bound to the pledge I have plighted.

“‘Let not my going, O monarch, occasion you grief or annoyance.
I am resigned to my fate, let that what the Lord wills befall me.
God grant you behold me, O King, return triumphant and happy.
If I return not, be happy, may your reign be long and prosperous’.

“This is, in short. my message”, Avtandil said to the vizier.
“Go, be the first to acquaint the king of all I have told you.
Let your persuasive phrases prevail on his heart, my Sograt.
And for this service to me I will richly reward you with gold.

AVTANDIL’S REQUEST TO KING ROSTEVAN AND THE VIZIER’S DISCOURSE AND ENTREATY

შენი ოქრო შენვე დაგრჩეს, მე, გლახ, მიწა მესამაროს;

ყმა ატირდა, ცრემლით უთხრა: “ხამს, თუ დანა გულსა ვიცი;

ჩემი ჩემებრ არვინ იცის, რა მამწარებს, რა მატკბუნვებს;

სჯობს წავიდე, არ გავტეხნე, კაცსა ფიცნი გამოსცდიან;

“Keep your reward for yourself” answered the vizier smiling.
It is favour enough for me that you honour my house with your presence.
How dare I tell the sovereign what you have told me in secret?
He will reward me, be sure, and load me with wealth for such tidings!

“I swear by your life, he will slay me the moment he hears the tidings.
Keep all your gold for yourself and dig a grave for my body.
Nothing in this world is dearer to man than life, yet destroy me!
Do what you will but no power on earth can compel me to tell him.

“Why should I sacrifice life since all my attempts will be futile.
He will unleash violence against me for daring to bring him such tidings!
How could you come’, he will say, ‘and bring me such news, you madman?
Life is far dearer than death, so why should I perish beforehand?

“Granted the king lets you go, but why should your hosts be imposed on?
Why should you leave them in darkness deprived of their sun and their leader?
If you depart you must know that our foes will grow bold and assail us.
Can we allow the sparrows to turn to hawks against us?”

Avtandil wept as he pleaded: “Why pierce my heart with a dagger!
Truly you know not love nor the joys and woes of a lover,
Nor have you ever, O vizier, given the pledges of friendship,
Else you would know that no joy in life can I have without him.

“The glorious sun has turned. No more does he shine upon us.
Let us befriend the youth who in turn will banish our darkness.
Who can judge better than I what embitters or sweetens my life?
Words idly uttered have power to poison and madden the reason.

“Can I, deprived of my reason, be of any avail to my armies?
Endlessly weeping and sighing, maddened and ravaged by passions?
Oaths prove a man, It is said. Can I break the pledge I have given?
Is there a man who has suffered the woes that youth is enduring?

AVTANDIL’S REQUEST TO KING ROSTEVAN AND THE VIZIER’S DISCOURSE AND ENTREATY

რკინა, ჩემი მონაცვალე, ხამს, გაცვილდეს, არ გატინდეს;

არ გამიშვებს, გავიპარვი, წავალ მათგან შეუგებლად;
ვიცი, ჩემთვის არას გიზამს, თუ არ უნდი გასაძებლად;

ვეღარ ვუჭვრეტ ცრემლთა შენთა, სოფელიცა გაქარდების;

ჩემი ჭმუნვა ჭირსა ჩემსა არცა ჰმატს და არცა სდიდობს;

“How can your heart, O vizier, be so callous and calm to my pleadings?
Now in your place not rocks but iron would melt in compassion.
Though the Gibeon flow from my eyes I cannot weep more for that hero.
Do this for me; in return I will repay you with favours.

“Secretly I shall depart, unknown to his highness, the sovereign.
For that knight I am ready to yield my life as an offering to Heaven.
The king, though enraged at my deed, will not harm or disgrace you, O vizier.
Promise to go to the king. Plead well my cause, I entreat you”.

Sograt said gravely: “Avtandil, I burn in the fires that consume you.
I can no longer endure the sight to behold you bitterly weeping.
Speech may be better than silence but we often spoil things by speaking.
Happen what may, though I die, I shall do all in my power to help you”.

Saying this, the vizier rose and went forth to the palace.
Where the sovereign sat in state with his sun-like countenance smiling.
Sograt grew pale as his eyes encountered those of the sovereign.
Wavering he stood bewildered, at a loss for words and expression.

Rostevan saw with surprise the dejected air of his vizier.
Puzzled, the monarch demanded: “What means your frown and your silence?”
The vizier bowed and said: “Your highness, great sorrow afflicts us.
Death will be my desert when I tell you the cause of my sadness.

“Neither my tears nor lamenting can express the sorrow I suffer.
I am speechless with fear though it befits not an envoy to waver.
Avtandil bids you farewell and entreats your forgiveness and mercy.
For he declares that the world is as nothing without that swordsman”.

Sograt told Rostevan all that he knew in timorous phrases.
Sighing he added: “Alas! No words can express what he suffers,
Of the unceasing tears that he sheds in the throes of his anguish.
That I should live after this is for you to decide, your highness”.

AVTANDIL’S REQUEST TO KING ROSTEVAN AND THE VIZIER’S DISCOURSE AND ENTREATY

ფერი ჰკრთა და გასაშიშრდა, შემხედველთა შეაშთობდა;

დადრკა, სკამნი შემოსტყორცნა, ჰკრნა კედელსა, შეალეწნა;

ვაზირმან, გლახ, გამოჰრიდნა, მართ ვეღარას ვერ იძრწივნებს;
გამოძრწა და გამომელდა, გულსა წყლულსა მოიმტკივნებს;

“Bids me farewell!” said the monarch like one bereft of his senses.
Then he grew livid as death and a violent rage overcame him.
“You are a madman”, he shouted “Who else would have dared to relate this?
He who is evil delights in being the first to speak evil.

“Like one with good tidings to tell, you hastened to me, you traitor.
Even If you had destroyed me more harm you could never have done me!
Only the tongue of a maniac would venture to utter such madness!
Truly, a madman like you is unworthy of being a vizier!

“Should not a man spare his master all that is vile and irksome,
Words which are carelessly uttered, words which profane and embitter?
God! had my ears been deafened before you arrived with your tidings!
O could I slay you, you villain! But why should I burden my conscience?

“If he had not sent you to me”, Rostevan said in his fury,
“By God! I would cut off your head and at once reduce you to ashes.
Out of my sight! Begone! you double-faced, insolent madman.
No one save you”, he said with a sneer, “could have been so courageous!”

He snatched up a chair in his rage and hurIed it at Sograt, the vizier;
He missed his aim but the chair was smashed on the wall into pieces.
“How could you tell me that he, that cypress of Heaven has departed?”
But Sograt stood silently shedding hot tears which flowed in deep channels.

The wretched old vizier left. He dared not utter a word;
Slunk away from the hall crestfallen, cowed by the wrath of his master.
Proud had been his arrival but his tongue had degraded and shamed him.
Man does more harm to himself than the cruellest of foes to his foe.

“Worse affliction than mine the Lord could not heap upon me!
Why was my mind filled with darkness! Why was I blind!” thought Sograt.
“Whoever has boldness to go and announce such news to his sovereign
Evil like mine will befall him, he too, must endure dishonour!”

AVTANDIL’S REQUEST TO KING ROSTEVAN AND THE VIZIER’S DISCOURSE AND ENTREATY

ვაზირი გაწბილებული მივა ბედითა შავითა;

მე თვით კაცად აღარ ვარგ ვარ, აღარა მიც თავსა ცნობა;

ვიაზრე, გამიწყრებოდა, ჭმუნვა მით გამდიდებია;

მაგრა ქრთამი რადღა გმართებს?“ გაიცინნა, გა-ცა-ღიმდა;

მართ ნადირთაებრ გაჭრასა ვირჩევ, მათ თანა რბოლასა;

ნუთუ გაბრჭოს, გული ჩემი ვით იწვის და ვით ენთების;

Mortified, sunk in deep gloom, with remorse eating his soul,
Sograt at once went to Avtandil and said: “What thanks can I give you!
Behold to what state the great vizier, the wisest of viziers has fallen!
I am to blame, not you for the evil fallen upon me!”

Sograt in jest said to Avtandil: “Give me the money you promised”.
How can he jest, I marvel when weeping and groaning in spirit!
“Why quarrel with viziers”, he joked. “by breaking the promise you gave him?
For it is said that even in hell a bribe settles matters.

“If only you could have heard his abuses and vile imprecations,
Cutting and taunting in tone, insulting, maddening, degrading.
Am I a man after this, thus deprived of all manly virtues?
I marvel I am still alive. The Lord must have given him patience.

“I knew well what would happen. Think not that you have misled me.
I knew that the king would be wroth, yet I yielded to you and your pleading.
None can avoid the doom decreed by the Heavenly powers.
Still, for your sake even death is a joy and my afflictions – as nothing”.

“Yet I must go”, said the youth overwhelmed by painful emotions.
“The nightingale weakens and dies when the rose droops low and withers.
He, if need be, must search for her sake a dewdrop of water,
But it his search is in vain how can his heart be consoled?

“No rest do I know, and my life is a cumbersome burden without him.
Rather to live like a beast in the forests than live here without him.
How can I serve the king or the realm thus distracted and maddened?
Better no man by your side than one who is bereft of reason.

“However enraged he may be I shall go at once and tell him.
He will perhaps judge better when he sees the fires that consume me.
Though he may bid me remain, yet I will go, my Sograt.
But if I die let the world and all I possess go to ruin”.

AVTANDIL’S REQUEST TO KING ROSTEVAN AND THE VIZIER’S DISCOURSE AND ENTREATY

კაცი იყო საქმისაცა შესაფერი, შესატყვისი;

Then the discourse was followed by a grand and magnificent banquet.
Sograt as host gave his guest a reception befitting an emperor.
Rich were the gifts and countless he bestowed on all who were present.
After a day of revelry, Sograt and Avtandil parted.

Avtandil took from his treasury the bag of gold he had promised.
Silks and brocades of gold and many magnificent presents,
More than sixty rare rubies of inexpressible size and of beauty,
And with the following message he sent all these riches to Sograt.

“Sograt, O vizier of viziers, Avtandil wrote in his message,
“How can I ever bestow upon you that which befits you?
What return can I think of, with what can I ever repay you?
I shall repay love for love if I live through the ordeals before me!”

He is a hero of heroes and is worthy of homage and honours.
How can I tell of his valour, praise his invincible prowess,
How for the sake of a friend he put all he had in adventure.
When a man is deep in trouble, he needs a friend and brother.
