AVTANDIL’S TALE AS TOLD TO ASMAT IN THE CAVE

ფიცხლა გაიქცა, მიჰმართა ზახილით კლდესა და ხესა;
ყმა გარდაიჭრა, დააბა, ვითა კაკაბი მახესა;

აწ მეტად ძნელსა საქმესა მნუკევ ადვილად თხრობასა;

ოდითგან ვეძებ ამბავთა, ესე არვისგან მსმენიან;

Then he swiftly descended and made at once for the cavern.
As he came near it he saw that the door of the cavern was open.
The maiden still weeping rushed out on hearing the sound of the stallion,
Thinking the knight had returned to the cavern after his wanderings.

Seeing a stranger she started, and uttering a scream turned swiftly,
Made for the rocks and the woods in a futile attempt to avoid him.
Avtandil leaped from his horse and seized her as one would a partridge.
The terrified cries of the maiden echoed off the mountain.

Frightened, she strove to escape from the grasp ing hand of the stranger.
Like a bird in the claws of an eagle she fluttered and trembled in terror.
Loudly she called, but in vain, for the help of a certain Tarlel.
Flinging himself on his knees Avtandil begged her to hear him.

“Tell me, what ill can I do you, I, a mere mortal?” he pleaded.
“Alas! I have gazed on the violet and rose and have seen them grow pallid.
Who is that cypress-formed swordsman? Tell me about him, I beg you.
Cry not so loudly!” he said, “Fear not, I come not to harm you”.

Weeping, the terrified maiden, repressing a scream, replied:
“If you are not maddened release me; if mad, return to reason.
Too lightly you ask me to tell you what tongue is powerless to utter.
Try not in vain, I beg you, to make me narrate his story.

“From where have you come to annoy me? What do you want?” she asked him.
“Nothing you say or do can force me tell you his story.
Speak!’ you shout and command, but I answer a hundred times, ‘No!’
As smiles are far better than tears, yet you see how I weep and am grievin”.

“Maiden”, AvtandH pleaded, “you know not the woes I have suffered.
I have searched long for that swordsman but no one could tell me about him.
Heaven be praised, I have found you! But know however I vex you
I will not go till you tell me something about that horseman.

მით რომე დამხსნი ტირილსა, შემშრების ცრემლთა ფონია;

“Why should I tell you about him? To me you are only a stranger.
You know that the sun is now absent, hence your cowardly boldness.
Listen! my words will be few, for a long discourse is tedious.
Do what you wish, kill me! I will tell you nothing about him!”

Flinging himself on his knees, again he fervently begged her.
But not a word would she utter however much he entreated.
Wearied at length and impatient, with eyes blazing red in his fury,
He savagely seized her long tresses and lifted his dagger to slay her.

“Can I forgive you your malice, such hardness of heart?” he shouted.
“Shal all my endeavours be shattered, the tears I have shed made futile?
I advise you to tell me about him. Refuse and you imperil your life.
Tell me of him, or, by Heaven, may I slaughter my foe as I kill you!”

Then the maiden replied: “You do ill by using such violence.
Though I am young and love life I fear not your threat to kill me.
What you desire me to say must remain in my bosom for ever.
But if I die what avails it? Can the tongues of the dead speak words?”

She said to him: “Who are you? Why, alas, have you found me?
Neither persuasion nor violence can make me narrate his story.
When I desire to die, only then can you slay me, O stranger.
And only then, like an old, discarded letter, shall you tear me.

“Think not that death would be grievous – a loathsome thing to be dreaded.
It would dry up the wells of my sorrow, and free me from unceasing weeping.
To me all life is as straw, and as lightly I weigh and esteem it.
You are a stranger to me, so why should I tell you his secret?”

“No force can induce her to speak”, Avtandil sadly reflected.
Letting her go he sat down and wondered what course he should follow.
Covering his face with his hands he gave himself up to weeping.
He said to her: “I have vexed you. Alas! Can I ever survive It?”

ქალი დაუჯდა კუშტ-გვარად, ქუშობს, ჯერთ არ დამტკბარია;
ავთანდილ ქვე ზის ტირილად, აღარას მოუბარია;

მაგრა უჯდა უცხოს უცხო, არ ბაგენი აუბარნა;

გაგარისხე, დარჩომილ ვარ ღარიბად და ამად ობლად;

მიჯნურისა შებრალება ხამს, ესეცა გაიგონე;
სხვაგნით ყოვლგნით უღონო ვარ, არვინ არის ჩემი ღონე;

კვლა უთხრა: “დაო, მიჯნური მტერთაცა შეებრალების;

ვარ მიჯნური, ხელი ვინმე, გაუძლებლად სულთა დგმისად;
ჩემმან მზემან გამომგზავნა საძებარად იმა ყმისად;

She sat with a gloomy frown, morose and troubled in spirit.
Avtandll, silently weeping, was prey to conflicting emotions.
The river of tears overflowed and dammed the fair garden of roses.
The heart of the maiden now softened on seeing him bitterly weeping.

Seeing his agonized weeping her heart was moved to compassion.
Stifling their tears they sat silent, far from each other like strangers.
Avtandil saw she was softened, that her anger had somewhat abated.
So taking fresh heart he rose and kneeling before her entreated:

“Now every hope is extinguished of being forgiven or pitied.
I have offended you sorely and am guilty before you, O maiden.
Hence I remain a stranger, alone in my sorrow and wretched.
Seven times Is a sinner forgiven. So I hope I may also be pardoned.

“Though I have vexed you, yet know, a lover should always be pitied.
No one save you is my refuge, no one save you can heal me.
Though I have only one life to yield for the sake of my loved one,
Yet will I yield it to you. What more can I do? Tell me!”

When she heard of his love and his suffering, of the fire that burned and consumed him, T
The pain in her heart was redoubled and her tears flowed downwards in torrents.
Making a piteous wailing she abandoned herself to lamenting.
Avtandil’s wish was fulfilled and his heart thanked God for His goodness.

Avtandil said to himself: My words have moved her to pity.
Perhaps she is also in love else why has her face changed its colour?
“Even the foe”, he said loudly, “pities the lover, O sister.
You know very well that lovers shrink not from death but seek it.

“I am a lover, a madman, whose life is unbearably painful.
She, the bright sun of my life, has sent me in quest of that swordsman.
Even a cloud cannot reach the wild places through which I have journeyed.
But thanks to the Lord I have found you whose heart with his heart throb together.

არ შენ მოგეც თავი ჩემი, დაგაბნიე, დაგაღონე;

რასაცა ეძებ, მიჰხვდები, უცილოდ არ ასცილდები;

წავალ თოკთა მოსახმელად, მწადსო, თუ-მცა ამოგზიდე”;

სხვად უღონოა უშენოდ ჩემგან აპყრობა ხელისა;

“His face is engraved on my mind, in divine. Ineffaceable image,
All other feelings are burnt in the flames of eternal passion.
Only one thing I implore – reject or accept me for ever.
I want you to crown or slay me. Grant me new life or oblivion!”

Touched by his grief, she replied, speaking in tones low and kindly:
“What you now say is truth, spoken in words more propitious,
Uprooting the hate that you sowed with speech that was bitter and hostile.
Now you have made me your friend, closer and truer than sister.

“Now that you seek to find aid by Invoking love’s power and glory,
I can no longer refuse it – all I can do shall be done.
I, who once brought you so low, fostered your grief and dejection,
I, even I, am your slave, ready to die in your service.

“Trust to my counsel and listen to all I shall say with attention.
Then shall your wish be fulfilled, then you will meet him you seek.
If not your attempts will be vain and the tears you have shed unavailing.
Cursing the world and its cares, you will die dishonoured and wretched”.

Avtandil said to the maiden: “I remember a similar story.
Once on a desolate roadside, two men were journeying together.
Suddenly one saw the other fall in a well before him.
Swiftly he ran to the well and looking down he cried loudly:

“‘Stay there,’ he called to the man, ‘stay there and wait for me, comrade,
I go to bring ropes,’ he added, ‘to pull you out of that hole.”
The man in the well laughed loudly and, greatly surprised, he answered:
Just as you ask, my friend. What else can I do but be patient?”

“The rope round my neck”, said Avtandil, “is now in your hands, O sister.
What can I do without you? Only you have the power to assist me.
You are my only refuge, the comforting balm in my madness.
Who but a madman would bind a head that is sound with a bandage?”

ხარ უცილოდ კარგი ვინმე, მოყმე, ბრძენთა საქებარი;

იმა მოყმისა ამბავი არსადა არ იპოვნების;
თვით თუ არ გითხრობს, არ ითქმის, არვისგან დაიჯერების;

ტარიელ არის სახელი იმა მოყმისა ხელისა;

ამას გვედრებ, მოიცადო, თავი სხვაგან არსად არო;
რა მოვიდეს, შევეხვეწო, ნუთუ ვითა მოვაგვარო;

ამას ზედა მოიხედნეს, ხევით ესმა ჩხაპუნება;

მაგრა თავი უჩინო ქმენ, დამალული იყავ შინა;
იმა ყმისა მეუნებლე ხორციელი არავინ- ა;

The maiden replied: “Your discourse and well-spoken words give pleasure.
You are, no doubt, respected and praised by the wise and the worthy.
Since for her sake you have suffered, now listen to me with attention.
Then will you surely attain the fulfilment of all your desires.

“Though you may seek the wide world you will never hear tidings about him.
No one but he can relate the wonderful things that befell him.
My advice is to wait in this cave until he comes back from the forest.
Freeze not nor snow up the rose with the flood of your tears, I entreat you.

“First I will tell you our names if your wish is to know them”, she said.
“The knight who wanders alone, distracted and maddened, is Tariel;
I, whom hot fires are consuming. am known by the name of Asmat.
Sigh upon sigh rend our bosoms; sorrow weighs heavy upon us.

“I cannot relate his story. Only this, my friend, will I tell you:
He wanders alone in the forests, overwhelmed and maddened by sorrow.
I sit in this cavern alone while he roams or hunts in the forest.
When he will come, I know not. It may be sooner or later.

Leave not the cavern but wait here till he returns from the forest.
I promise to plead for your cause; perhaps I will make him receive you.
Maybe, when you know one another, he will love you and tell you his story.
Your wish will then be fulfilled whereby your sun will rejoice”.

Avtandil’s joy knew no bounds and he gladly followed her counsel.
Startled, they suddenly heard the sound of a splash from the marshes,
And like the moon shedding brightness they saw the horseman approaching.
Fearing the knight would behold them they hastily entered the cavern.

“May the great Lord hear your prayers and fulfil your desires”, said Aimat.
“Quickly, hide lest he sees you. In the lower end of the cavern.
Go, for no human being can withstand his invincible prowess.
Perhaps I may soften his heart with persuasive and eloquent phrases”.

იგი ყმა ცხენსა გარდახდა, შვენოდა კაპარჭ-ხრმალითა;

დიდხან იტირეს ყმამან და მან ქალმან შაოსანამან;
შეხსნა, შეიღო აბჯარი, ცხენიცა შეიყვანა მან;

მან ქალმან ქვეშე დაუგო ვეფხის ტყავისა ნატები;

ეგონა ჭამა ხორცისა შემწვრისა, შეუქმნელისა;

ცოტად მიწვა, მიიძინა, თუცა ყოლა ვერა მეტი;

Taking his hand the maiden hid him deep in the cavern.
Then she went out to the horseman who was now dismounting his stallion.
Weeping they greeted each other; their tears flowed down to the ocean.
Avtandil hidden from view gazed on the sight and marvelled.

The flow of hot tears turned the crystal, alas, to the colour of amber.
Long did the swordsman and maiden indulge in heart-rending weeping.
Then she unbuckled his armour and together they entered the cavern.
They were silent. The sabre-like lashes of jet cut the flow of their tears.

Avtandil watched from the opening, a captive now freed from his dungeon
He saw how she spread on the ground a panther skin for the horseman.
Tariel sat down upon it; sigh upon sigh was redoubled.
The jet-black lashes were plaited by tears intermingled with blood

Striking a light with a flint the maiden kindled a fire.
Thinking him hungry she placed some roasted fowl before him.
He seemed not to relish the food and scarcely partook of the meal,
Listlessly biting a piece, then spitting it out without chewing.

Then he reclined on the skin, and soon he was fast asleep.
All at once he jumped up and screamed like one bereft of his senses.
Weeping, he smote his breast with a stone and his head with a cudgel.
Gazing upon him the maiden scratched her cheeks and wept loudly.

“Why have you come so soon? Has anything happened?“she asked him.
He said: “Far away on a plain I encountered a king who was hunting.
He had countless soldiers with him, heavily loaded with luggage.
And was enjoying good sport on the plain where beaters were scattered.

“When I set eyes on those hunters the fires within me burned fiercer,
For, as you know, I avoid them and detest the sight of all beings.
I turned round my horse and left them to conceal myself in the forest.
Tomorrow at daybreak, I said, I shall go if no one pursues me”.

ქალსა ცრემლნი გარდმოსცვივდეს ას-ნაკეცნი, ბევრის-ბევრად;
არას კაცსა არ იახლებ საუბრად და შემაქცევრად;

გეახლოს და არ გაჰშმაგდე, თუცა ჭირი არ გაკლია;

ქალმან ჰკადრა: “არ გამიწყრე, ვიშიშვი და ვიაჯ დია;

Her tears flowed a hundred times more, a thousand times more as she answered:
“With the wild beasts you wander, alone in the deepest of forests,
Shunning the friendship of man, and the world with its joys and its pleasures.
How can you render her aid if you spend all your days in weeping?

“Over the face of the earth you have wandered in search of your loved one.
Strange that you met not a soul to confide in and afford you some pleasure!
But if your rage is increased on seeing a man approach you,
Would it diminish your sorrow if one or the other is slaughtered?”

“This is”, he said, “the desire of your well-meaning heart, my sister.
But there is no balm upon earth with which I can soothe my wound,
Nor is there man in this world with whom I can share my affliction.
My only hope is in death, the severance of soul from body.

“Though I may wish for a comrade to confide in and have as companion,
Why should God cause another to suffer the same fate as I do?
Who could endure what I suffer or even endeavour to bear it?
I have no one but you in this world who can share my misfortune”.

Asmat replied: “Be not angry with me for speaking so boldly.
God, as you see, has made me your companion and comrade in sorrow.
You have afflicted yourself, overstepped all limits of reason.
Now I shall speak to you frankly, so listen to me and my counsel”.

Puzzled, he said to the maiden: “I know not what you desire.
Can I without God create a man who would faithfully serve me?
My lot is to yield to fate and submit to Heaven’s decree.
True, I resemble a beast roaming the forests, my sister”.

She said: “No doubt I have vexed you, my brother, with overmuch counsel.
But if I find such a man who would come and willingly serve you,
One who would render you aid, one you can love and confide in,
Will you swear and give me your promise not to offend or slay him”

არას ვუზამ უგემურსა, არათ ოდეს გავამწარებ;

Tariel answered: “My sister, great will my joy be to see him,
I swear by the love of that maiden for whose sake I wander thus maddened
That I shall welcome him warmly and do nothing to injure or vex him.
I shall be pleasant and cordial and receive him as one would a brother”.
