THE MEETING OF TARIEL AND NESTAN

მონა შემოდგა, მივეცი საქმესა გაკვირვებულსა;

შეღამდა, წავე, ბაღისა მე კარი შევიარეო;

შემავლო სახლი, ნაგები კეკლუცად ბანის-ბანითა;

დავჯე, მივეც გულსა ლხინი, საწუთროსა დამგმობარსა;

მე თუ ზე-პირ მიცინია, ქვე-ქვე მითქვამს იდუმალ ვა;

“To my wonder I saw her servant enter the chamber.
Scarcely repressing my feelings, I at once read the letter he gave me.
The sun for whom you are longing now calls you to her’, wrote Asmat,
Why do you sit lamenting your destiny? Come! She awaits you’.

Such was my joy at the tidings that fortitude almost forsook me,
But I recovered and when it was evening I went to her palace.
Asmat was waiting for me at the gate of the royal garden.
Enter’, she said with a smile, ‘The moon awaits you, the lion’.

“I was conducted by Asmat to the sun-maid’s beautiful chamber.
The moon was surrounded with lustre that fell In radiance about her.
Clad in a sea-green garment she sat with the mien of an empress,
Proud yet tempered with sweetness, exquisite of form and of visage.

“I entered and stood on the edge of the carpet with my heart beating fiercely.
The fire within me was quieted, the darkness of heart was lightened.
She who was fairer than sunrays reclined on the softest of cushions.
She blushed and lowered her eyes, then raised them up for a moment.

“’Asmat, entreat him to come and be seated beside me’, she ordered.
First I bent low before her, then seated myself on a cushion.
Fate that wounded my heart now filled it with joy and with gladness.
I marvel I live as I utter the words she murmured that evening.

“‘l know you were hurt at my silence that day’, she said with a sigh,
Offended and grieved, O lion, that I sent you away’, she added.
Absence from me has withered the rose that the sun has abandoned.
Am I to be blamed If my love has rendered me bashful before you?

“’Though it befits a woman to be modest before man,
Yet it is worse to be silent and keep one’s sorrow a secret.
Though I outwardly smiled, yet I felt woe growing within me.
Therefore I sent you my maid with a letter disclosing my feelings.

აწცა მიცოდი საშენოდ მითვე პირითა მტკიცითა;

წა, შეები ხატაელთა, ილაშქრე და ინაპირე;

აწ რასაცა მე მაღირსებ, ხორციელი არვინ ღირს-ა;
მოწყალება იჩქითია, ღმრთისა ამად არა მკვირსა;

მე გამიახლდა სოფელი, მქონდა სიმრავლე ლხინისა;

“‘Love has us both In her net. Let us open our hearts to each other.
Know that my heart is now yours in eternal love and devotion.
If, O my love, I deceive you, may God cast His curses upon me,
Turn me to earth, never to sit in the nine blessed Heavens.

Go now, attack the Khatavians, invade their marches and seize them.
God grant you slaughter the foe and return rejoicing, triumphant.
Can I endure the torture caused by your absence, my loved one?
Give me your heart undivided; take mine for yourself to cherish”.

“I said to her: ‘For your sake I would suffer the sharpest of torments.
You bad compassion upon me, revived me and ended my anguish.
You are the light of my eyes, the sun that illumines my being.
I shall go forth like a lion, and confound the cursed Khatavians.

“‘That you think me worthy of this Is an honour no man deserves.
Only from God could such grace be bestowed on a human being.
Your rays have flooded my heart and made It translucent and bilght.
I shall be yours in devotion till the earth covers my face’.

Then on the Book of Oaths we plighted an oath to each other.
Solemnly pledging our troth of binding and sacred devotion.
She swore as follows: ‘Let God deprive me of all I cherish
If I relinquish my promise and falsify what I have promised’.

“Then we discoursed with each other indulging in sweet conversation.
We ate delicious fruit and spoke of our love and were happy.
But when I rose to depart uncontrollable tears overcame me,
Yet in my heart the bright rays of her face descended and warmed me.

“It irked me, to leave my beloved, the crystal; enamal and ruby.
The world was to be once again a place of delight and rejoicing.
The pleasures of life were now mine and the celestial light of the heavens.
Truly my heart Is a rock that it bears separation from her.
