The Knight in the Panther's Skin
THE GOING OF AVTANDIL TO PRIDON’S
იტყვის, თუ: “ღვარი სისხლისა კვლაცა მდენია, კვლაცა მდის;
ველს მაშინ მხეცნი ძღებოდეს სისხლითა მუნ ნატირითა;
ვერ დაივსებდა სახმილსა, იწვის ცეცხლითა ხშირითა;
კვლა თინათინის გონება ავსებს უფრო-რე ჭირითა;
ვარდი ჭნებოდა, ღვრებოდა, ალვისა შტო ირხეოდა;
ბროლი და ლალი გათლილი ლაჟვარდად გარდიქცეოდა;
გაჰმაგრებოდა სიკვდილსა, ამისთვის არ უმხნეოდ -ა;
შენ მას ჰგავ და იგი შენ გგავს, თქვენ ანათობთ მთად და ბარად;
მაგრა კლდესა არა შესწონს, არაოდეს არ იმტკივნებს;
Alas, O world, what ails you? Why this perpetual whirl?
All who have trusted in you are In tears like me and heart-sick.
Though you uprooted our joy and made us, O world, to suffer,
Yet God forsakes not the man you have cast from you and abandoned.
Avtandil bitterly wept, his voice resounded in heaven.
He said: “The stream of my tears commingled with blood flows anew.
The search was an endless anguish but the parting is even more grievous.
Men are not equal but vary, for each has his thoughts and his wishes”.
The beasts came out of the forests. to gaze on the swordsman weeping.
His heart burned with ravaging fire; he could not extinguish the furnace.
The fires blazed higher and fiercer as he thought of her whom he worshipped.
Coral caught rays from the crystal that flashed in resplendent brightness.
The branch of the cypress quivered; the rose drooped tower and faded.
The crystal and ruby now changed to a lustreless shadow.
He mustered his courage and strength ened himself to encounter death.
“Why should I wonder at darkness, when you, O my sun, are absent?”
He said to the sun: “To you, O Sun, do I liken my loved one;
Like you she scatters her lustre. Illumining mountain and valley.
Despite my woes I rejoice as I gaze on your radiant features.
Why, O my sun, have you left me alone and chilled by your absence?
“We freeze if the sun is absent from us for a month in winter.
I have parted from two; how then, can my heart be unharmed?
Can I be like rock that feels neither pain nor affliction?
A knife cannot cure a wound; it cuts and pierces the deeper”.
Avtandil looked toward Heaven and fervently prayed as he journeyed:
“O glorious Sun of the heavens, the mightiest of all that are mighty,
You who exalt the humble, subdue the vain and the arrogant,
Turn not my day into night, unite me with her once again!
